NOlympics LA
2026 Coalition Retreat Recap
On February 1, NOlympics gathered together with our coalition members for a day-long retreat to exchange ideas and dream up plans to fight the Olympics and the injustices it inflicts on our communities.
The retreat took place at a critical moment, as Los Angeles is gearing up to host the World Cup, and elected officials push for our city to become a permanent host of mega events, while offering no protection from the horrors of Trump-fueled capitalism, and all its policing, surveillance, gentrification, and displacement. Our retreat offered space to realign, reimagine, and recommit to our resistance efforts.
We had great attendance, with nearly sixty participants representing 25 members from our growing coalition of organizations, aligned on our common platform.
We had great conversations about past Olympic resistance efforts and our concrete plans for the coming years of Olympics resistance.
All this was supported by meeting space generously provided by our long-time coalition member org, SAJE, and nourishing food prepared by Peopleβs Cafe LA.
Our hope is that, throughout the day, participants gained a deeper knowledge about how mega-events like the Olympics are connected to many other struggles, and left with a renewed determination to stop LA from becoming the host of The Forever Games
We deeply appreciate our participants for their attendance and engagement in the retreat, and are energized to keep working together in the years ahead.
Thank you to all the organizations that attended our retreat this year β

It's time for everyone in LA to realize that cancelling the Olympics will be a lot less costly than hosting them, in many more ways than one.

I just completed a study for SAJE on whether LA should try to back out of hosting the 2028 Olympics. The short answer: It could cost billions to extricate LA from its Olympic contract, but could cost even more billions to go through with it, so it's worth considering. www.saje.net/wp-content/u...

A city that can't win
LA has limited options to get out of hosting in 2028 β but LA does have options
"The decision on whether to try to cancel or renegotiate the terms of Olympic hosting depends on which you prefer to risk: billions of dollars in losses on hosting the Games, or billions in penalties for not hosting them."
A new @saje-la.bsky.social report by @neildemause.bsky.social is a must-read

Did you know? If the 2028 Games end up with the same level of cost overruns as other recent Olympics, L.A. taxpayers could end up covering $6.6 billion or more in expenses.
