Ring of Fire is out now! Itβs like the Guns of August for a new generation: the opening weeks of WW1 through the eyes of ordinary men, women and children. And not just in Western Europe, but across the globe. It was bloody, terrifying and neutrality was a shamβ¦ geni.us/RingOfFire

Cover of Weeping Britannia: Portrait of a Nation in Tears
I expect you're wondering whether other leading politicians have shed tears in the House of Commons before - and more generally about the history of crying in British culture, and what it means.

This is a very good essay, & touches on one of the most important convergences between tech-utopianism & fascism, namely the pursuit of homogeneity.
Homogeneity in literature dulls the mind & sharpens the fear by which people become stupid & obedient.
Homogeneity is a gateway to fascism.

Amazing! I literally just left a careers session at HPS in Cambridge where I explained to a group of PhD students that their ability to process and reflect on large nebulous quantities of information at speed was a skill so desirable the tech-bros are trying to mimic it with LLMs and AI.
