Finally posted another review yesterday after nine months. Last night I also received a comment on a 15-year-old review that I should “stop reviewing.” 😂 I mean fuck this dude, but also the timing was hilarious
That’s so cool! It’s wild to see how much more popular and available the Shaw films are now compared to when I started. I love it.
Thanks! I watched Deadly Breaking Sword already, I just have to get finish the post. So not too long on that one probably.
At long last I have found the time and energy to put together another review. Here's my look at Chang Cheh's Shaolin Rescuers! www.silveremulsion.com/2026/03/11/s...
It does have that lumbering around quality. Have you heard the one with lyrics?
Curse of Evil was on the ZiiEagle so it was remastered during the initial wave but no HK dvd. They seem to be doing a lot of new scans lately too, so I think it could be a possibility.
This gwai lou's gun in Iron Monkey 2 is wild.
How it must feel waiting for me to post the next Shaw review 😂
They also list two commentaries on the back, but only the Brian Bankston one is on the disc. Proofreading and quality control doesn’t seem to be their strong suit.
So upon actually looking at Shout’s blu-ray, it’s in Cantonese! Figures they wouldn’t get a detail like that correct. They seem to do things like that pretty often. Only difference from iTunes release is that it’s been adjusted from PAL so it’s running at the correct speed now.
they should make a movie series about how it’s irresponsible to use technology to mess with the natural order of things for profit

I also tried to tell people to wait but couldn't share all the specifics (and it wasn’t just because I contributed essays). Arrow just did better work across the board with these releases, including with their restorations, subs from someone who actually speaks Cantonese, the artwork, etc.
For MLK Day on @letterboxd.social I decided to do a list of essential Civil Rights and Black Liberation movies.
UK/US: Left at the altar and lost after a drunken bender, Michael is nursed back to health by grieving widow Sue in ROMANCING IN THIN AIR.
Although best known for action films, Johnnie To crafts a powerful meditation on grief and catharsis in this moving romantic melodrama.
Omg I love it 😻
Sad to hear Yuen Cheung-Yan has passed.
Brother of Yuen Woo-Ping and part of the iconic Yuen family, he was everywhere in HK action cinema.
He grew into a comic actor, director, and stunt coordinator whose work even carried him to Hollywood (Daredevil, Charlie’s Angels).
Presenting...

A few months back I discovered Neocities, a hosting site looking to bring back the days of Geocities. So I decided to resurrect my original Goonies website! Welcome back to 1997!
i am low in funds so please consider buying one of my zines or a zine bundle! these are idiosyncratic & a sublime treat for film lovers!!
any boost greatly appreciated ❤️❤️❤️
1949 will finally be out at the start of 2026
Cool to see these coming from VS. I liked Haunted Tales a lot, Hell Has no Boundary pretty well, and I haven’t seen Sex Beyond the Grave yet. Of note is that I believe Haunted Tales and Sex Beyond were both VCD only releases in HK (although Sex does have the recent AU blu release from Imprint).
I haven't had time to return to reviewing, but for Halloween I have released the extremely rare 1968 Shaw Brothers supernatural film, The Enchanted Chamber, on my YouTube! The overwhelming reception to putting Reckless Cricket up gave me the idea to see what other rare things I could share!
