focus on healing, yes?” her tone
brokered no room for argument.

“what do you need, my darling? food?
milk of the poppy? name it and it
will be yours.”

she said quietly as she sat on
the edge of the bed, hand still brushing back his hair.

she could see him, many, many,
many moons ago. just a babe in her
arms. he’d been just as strong and
stubborn then, with a lusty cry and
a furrowed brow. and no matter
how much time passed…

“i know,” rhaenyra answered quickly.
as much as she was often wroth with
worry over her son’s temper, she could
not help but find herself agreeing.

that knight had harmed her son. made a fool of him in that tent.
made her husband fight. and now this.

“perhaps such a time will come…”

“jacaerys?” rhaenyra called softly as she peered around the open door into his chambers. “are you awake, sweet boy?”

but she welcomed it.

her children would be abed.
except for one.

one who always lingered in the darkness.
one who, despite everything, was her
warmth. was her comfort.

rhaenyra approached the familiar door.
not bothering to knock.

for he would never turn her away.

there was but a simple solution in
her mind. a notion she knew would
be followed without question. without
feigned concern.

only love. pure and unending.

rhaenyra slipped from her bed, adoring
her robe before opening the door
to her chambers. the stone flooring
was cold against her feet (…)

rhaenyra hadn’t slept properly in days.
weeks, even. tossing and turning, counting dragons in her mind. even singing lullabies of old to herself.
nothing seemed to aid her.

the comfort was not there. the
warmth.

she sat up in her bed, a huff of air leaving her. (…)

she wanted to scream at him for the chaos
his choice had wrought. to shake him until
the anger that lingered in his
mind was nothing more than a distant memory.

but she could not.
not when he was here. alive.

"you fought well," she whispered.
"despite it all, yielding or no, you fought well."

rhaenyra entered the chambers, her eyes immediately
finding him.

"my son..." she breathed out, rushing to the side of the
bed.

her hands hovered, useless, before settling upon his forehead, brushing some errant strands of silver hair, so much like her own, from his skin. (...)

each strike had felt like one to her own skin.

she felt it even now as she all but sprinted
through the halls. her eyes glared daggers upon
the guards at the door, almost wishing they would
try to defy her.

he would heal, the maester had said.
and she would be there through it all. (...)

rhaenyra had known that the trial of seven would only lead to ruin. she'd watched with her hands clutching the arms of her chair, knuckles turning white.

daeron had fallen, from injury or feigning, she could not say. maekar had been a blur, a dark cloud.

but aerion held her attention. (...)

rhaenyra smiled, true and warm.

"i have no doubt of that," she affirmed with
a nod.

she had certainly felt the icy
distance between snow and herself.
and wished to rectify it. he was a
hardened soul. a shell she wished to see within.

"if anyone can handle him,
it is most certainly you."

i was merely offering a moment of company, brother.

you do spend quite a bit of time in your chambers.

i wonder if he grows bored of idly watching you
toil over maps and parchments.

rhaenyra paused before another quip could
roll off her tongue.

"aerion," she spoke softly.

"perhaps you would wish to join
me for a ride upon the morrow.
a rider gave word that grey ghost hunts ever closer."

for she knew a 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗱 dragon would be far
better suited for his fire drenched soul.
