One thing that we miss when we rely on Spotify etc for music recommendations is the stories that go with our music collections - “I found this CD in the bargain bin at Tower Records in London on a school trip in 2003.” “The driver of the tourist bus I was on recommended this.” Personal music lore.

Actually there’s a subset of the population (a small one) that has “musical anhedonia” and has no emotional response to music. About 5% of people. I kind of suspect my mom might be one of them, as she’s actively put off if anyone tries to put any music on; the rest of my family are obsessed with it.

This is the day where I tell the people who pay us to do archaeological survey that it snowed 7-10 inches last weekend and no more archaeology can happen until spring. (I try to warn of this eventuality every year but they never listen.)

When I was in high school (circa late 90s/2000) I couldn’t admit I liked Fleetwood Mac to my other classic rock listening friends; they weren’t acceptable the way Pink Floyd, Led Zep etc were. Now everyone LOVES Fleetwood Mac again. Wild how that works.

I work at what feels like one of the only R1s without a significant sports program and honestly it’s great, our marketing even focuses on our research. But all of the Federal (and some years ago State) attacks on higher ed do still threaten to erode that.
