Translation: Gordon Brown is apocalyptically furious that as he was trying to do a good job, which he was clearly far better able to do than his opponents, Mandelson & Andrew were both actively trying to screw him over for the benefit of their rich pedo pal, & yes he will happily see them both burn

Fun fact: one of my great-great-great-etc. relatives attended to Charles I at his execution.

My hope is that he panics and tells all and then we get some American spillover effects. Probably too much to ask for tbh

Gladys Mae West obituary: mathematician who pioneered GPS technology She made key contributions to US cold-war science despite facing huge barriers as a Black woman.

No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition.

Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...

“We are a Minneapolis 2nd grade Brownie Troop of 12 including trans and neurodiverse youth and 75% BIPOC kids. We want to go to summer camp and try horseback riding! During the current ICE occupation we need your support more than ever...”

And that’s how I ordered 4 boxes of thin mints.

Everything is beyond terrible and I seem to have developed an unsettling inner ear muscle spasm from the stress of it. But today my 6 year old and I played Oregon Trail, went ice skating, and played with her American Girl dolls. If 10 year old me could’ve designed her dream day, this would be it.

Screenshot of a data visualization titled “The Cost of American Exceptionalism,” subtitled “What would change if the U.S. matched the OECD average?” The page explains that each card shows how outcomes would change if the U.S. matched the average of 31 peer democracies. Below, a section labeled “Economy & Inequality” displays eight cards comparing U.S. figures to OECD averages. Highlights include: +$19K per household per year in redistributed income and +$96K in redistributed wealth if the top 1% matched OECD shares; a 71% lower CEO-to-worker pay ratio (from 354× to 101×); 50 million more workers with union coverage; 26 million more people with health insurance; $2.1 trillion saved annually in healthcare spending; $691 less per person per year in prescription drug costs; and intergenerational economic mobility being twice as high. Each card shows the U.S. value alongside the OECD average.

If there's one empirical insight I'd want everyone to understand about American politics, it's this:

America's problems are solved problems. Just not here.

What would change if the US simply matched the average of 31 peer democracies? Not Denmark or Norway. Just the middle of the pack. 🧵

I would love to go to MBS and chat 1990s, Bridget Jones, Princess Diana, Mass Observation. But I’m on maternity leave now (I’ll have to bring my baby to the conference) and can’t organise a panel. If anyone wants to do something, let me know!!

I love how you described your encounter with the EC. This is how I felt the first time I attended a COE church whilst living in England having grown up evangelical, and although I attend a PCUSA church because my family prefers it, I will never not be Episcopalian at heart. My soul indeed relaxed.

O holy night, the stars are brightly shining;
it is the night of the dear Savior’s birth...

Truly He taught us to love one another;
His law is love and His gospel is peace.
Chains shall He break, for the slave is our brother,
and in His name all oppression shall cease.
