In 1914, Zella de Milhau, an artist and suffragist, with her partner, writer Mollie Lawton, joined the Women’s Emergency Corps and went to the front with the French army. After the Armistice, de Milhau said: “War must go, women must stop it. They have the power, the endurance, the persistent will."
