I met young entrepreneurs devoted to building a better future, civil society leaders who’ve courageously safeguarded democracy and justice, and media partners (like West Africa Democracy Radio) who remain the heartbeat of an open society. Together, we explored areas for mutual collaboration.

Resources Futures in Africa: Reclaiming Economic Sovereignty -Ensure that Africa’s critical minerals benefit its people—not just global markets -Work to align mineral extraction with sustainable development goals, strengthen environmental and social justice movements, and promote just and transparent resource governance

Today we announce three multiyear programs in Africa to advance civic engagement, economic prosperity, and peacebuilding.

We discussed the country's priorities as set out in Agenda 2050: economic transformation, institutional reform, youth inclusion (especially employment), anti-corruption, and Senegal's regional leadership in the Sahel.

I reaffirmed @Open-Society.bsky.social's commitment to standing with the Senegalese people at this pivotal moment of significant global challenges.

Today, I sat down with President Faye to discuss Senegal's bold vision for democratic renewal and justice— and to congratulate him on his historic election.

What I found most striking about Edsall’s piece was the points made by scholar Theda Skocpol. She points out that Trump is creating a system of “competitive sycophancy” and could use ICE as a private army which could ruin American democracy. 👇

Not to mention interacting with invaluable members of the country’s robust civil society.

I leave Ghana deeply inspired by its open society principles and the vision and resolve of its people, civil society, and government to drive a nationally-led transformation.

It was also my pleasure to join a panel co-hosted by @Open-Society.bsky.social, ACEP Power, and Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor of Ghana’s Ministry of Energy & Green Transition to discuss Ghana’s energy policy under President Mahama — and the path to a just, climate-aligned transformation.

I was honored to join Minister for Foreign Affairs Ablakwa, alongside leading Ghanaian scholars and activists, for a candid dialogue on the AU Decade of Justice for Africans and Afro-descendants impacted by slavery, colonialism, and apartheid.

If you said Black Lives Matter, now’s the time to prove it.

Juneteenth is an important day to celebrate progress and Black liberation, while acknowledging the work that remains to perfect our Union. But this year, it arrives as Trump and his allies work to reverse hard-won progress.

This was a special one.

Eid Mubarak! Happy Eid-al-Adha to so many celebrating about the world.

Five years after, I hope this day can serve as a reminder that lasting change does not come quickly. I hope today can serve as a reminder to remember where you were and where you stood five years ago, and to recommit to a society where violence is not rewarded and Black lives, indeed do matter.

So many of the corporations and institutions that were so vocal for change have retreated or would rather forget where they once stood in 2020, all this while police killings have only gone up since, with 2024 being the deadliest year on record.

Five years since George Floyd was murdered.

Five years since millions of all races and backgrounds demanded that Black lives matter — not just in word, but in action.

The murder of Sarah Milgrim and Yaron Lischinsky at the Capital Jewish Museum was evil in its most basic form. This brutal antisemitic act must be condemned in the strongest terms.

This is another Trump-led setback in our fight for lasting police reforms, made all the more difficult by the noticeable silence of so many who claimed they were once committed to Black lives.
