In Hospitals and Hospices, ‘Music as Care’ Offers a New Kind of Comfort (Gift Article) A violinist plays for her father. A singer takes requests. In hospitals and hospices, bedside performers offer a new kind of care.

Sharing a beautiful story of the Peabody musicians who bring incredible care & comfort to patients - and staff - at Hopkins 🩷

The impact is their work highlights the power of music & importance of personal connection.

A few important nots:
- hospice is not a place
- palliative care is not hospice
- talking about death does not make people give up or die
- at the end of life food does not make you stronger
- taking morphine for advanced cancer pain does not mean you’re dying/an addict/giving up

Inpatient referrals for psychology are often like- can we help a patient with 'strategies'.

In reality, we spend time with people & listen to what's going on, "how are you really?" Often there's a question or message to pass on to the medical team.

It's not really about strategies. It's listening.

The patient's daughter told the healthcare team that her dying mom loved the beach. Without asking, @thanhneville.bsky.social made these "heartbeats in a bottle" for the patient's husband and daughter, and they loved it so much. Sometimes, small acts of #kindness can go a long way.

Thank you for sharing! And for normalizing honest conversations with children about death.

Their honestly and practicality is really something 🩷 and often worth a laugh!

He asked if various people will die. When he asked “will daddy die?”, and I told him yes, he paused to think then said… “our dogs will be really, really sad”.

I was touched by his empathy 🥹 My husband, while initially touched, was alarmed that only the dogs will be bereft 😆

My 3.5yo recent asked me about death and I have never been more prepared to answer a toddler’s question… all thanks to our incredible #ChildLifeSpecialists who teach us (in adult #hapc) how to talk to little ones (even our own 🩷)

Table of negative binomial regression

A sobering empirical piece in JAMA.

Homicide has long been THE LEADING CAUSE of maternal/peripartum death.

Here they show:
* restrictions on divorce
* restrictions on abortion…
both correlate with pregnancy homicide (albeit differently, depending on age/race) 🛟🩺

Channel your sadness, your anger, your grief. Pick a cause you believe in and commit. Give it your time, your energy, your whole heart. Passionate individuals who will act on their beliefs are stronger than politics. Our causes will not die. Have faith in our collective goodness.
