So we name that we have beloved immigrants and transgender children of God in our congregation, neighborhood, and extended family reach. And we are with and for them all, just like God is.

I imagine it’s jarring for folks. They joined a church decades ago that was part of the country club experiences, a safe and fun place for the whole family. Now their city and church are more diverse and on the margins. Sometimes it’s hard to face the truth. But the truth will set us free, I’m told.

But there is always trouble when you name that the congregation contains folks being dehumanized. That you serve folks who are having their dignity taken away. That you stand with those neighbors and church members, not with the privileged folks. These convos went about the same in past places, too.

I will add, my current congregation and I are generally very much moving in the same direction. There are always a few folks that I’m amazed stay when they seem to be on an island. They want to be seen. They also know that our church welcomes all, even them. So we have a loop of feedback with them.

So far in my dozenish years of weekly preaching, the thing I find that offends people the most is when you plainly tell the truth. About yourself, about your church, about the culture, about Jesus, about the Bible, all of it. Observe and report and find that folks don’t like it. Same as it ever was.

I think the idea that “The President is simultaneously an institution beyond the reach of criminal law and also a private person who can file $10 billion defamation suits when he dislikes a news article” is not very sensible.

My guess is that our entire political scene would be a lot better if more folks cared as much about who their own mayor is as they seem to care about who might be mayor in NYC…
