What 200,000 or more people called with a single voice was #SanctionIsrael - why can’t we talk about that? - not views of NSW police on their dodgy views of potential risks that never looked like eventuating #MarchforHumanity

β€˜Immense’ pro-Palestine march to cross Sydney Harbour Bridge as police prepare for five-hour shutdown Supreme court judge says protest motivated by belief that β€˜the horror and urgency of the situation in Gaza demands an urgent and extraordinary response’

"The enterprise is so mad" Late-night thoughts on the haunted house of politics

β€œI genuinely think if you took a normal person and put them in Parliament, they would be horrified by the kind of micro bullying, bad behaviour and lack of knowledge. It's tribal. It's a game. It's, can I stick it to the opposition? The enterprise is so mad.”

60,000 Gazans have been killed. 18,500 were children. These are their names. Palestinian children have been killed at a rate of more than one per hour since the war began.

Kudos to the Wapo for producing this horrifying account: every death in Gaza since 7 Oct 2023.

I must make two honest confessions to you, my Christian and Jewish brothers. First, I must confess that over the past few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season." Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection.

As an example, we'd still be waiting for marriage equality if activists had pitched to the centre rather than shifted it.
That's what "change" is.

27.07.2025 04:38 β€” πŸ‘ 34    πŸ” 6    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

Some good responses to this. I'd add "the centre" is a misleading construct. It is not some pre-existing set of circumstances but something created by, amongst other things, activism. That is, activism helps create "the centre". It can't, therefore "pitch" to it.
