Excerpt: Making the MiamiΒ Cubanita Paula Davis Hoffman is an adjunct professor of history at Houston City College. Her new book Making the Miami Cubanita: A Pop Cultural Genealogy (Nebraska, 2026) was published this month. At the end of the nineteenth century, William Randolph Hearst’s New York Journal glorified cubanas as β€œthe most feminine and simple women in the world.” Ever since, the stereotype of Cuban femininity as chaste and dutiful has informed Cubans’ racial, social, and ethnic identity in the dominant American imagination, and this gendered and deracialized narrative has taken different forms and served various purposes throughout the Cuban diaspora.

Excerpt: MAKING THE MIAMI CUBANITA by Paula Davis Hoffman

This new book examines the cultural precepts and political aims underlying the construction of Cuban femininity in pop culture outlets produced by, for, and about Cuban Americans of the Cuban diaspora.

The essays in SELECTED MISDEMEANORS are unapologetic word grenades lobbed into an otherwise complacent forgetfulness. Sue William Silverman focuses on pivotal, often fleeting moments that defined the course of her life.

Biography spotlights Virginia Faulkner’s legacy at Nebraska Press A new biography revisits the life and legacy of Virginia Faulkner, the longtime University of Nebraska Press editor who helped revive Willa Cather’s reputation and build the Bison Books imprint. Once largely overlooked, Faulkner’s influence on the press β€” and American literary scholarship β€” still resonates decades later.

"As the University of Nebraska Press marks its 85th year, the house Faulkner helped shape is telling her story from the very imprint she helped build."

VIRGINIA FAULKNER by @neglectedbooks.com was featured in Nebraska Today, with comments from our Editor in Chief @bridgetrbarry.bsky.social!
