The EAA votes are out
The great majority of our archaeological community has voted in favour of the petitions raised by #concernedEAA. We asked for a democratic process, we asked for accountability, and for the need to acknowledge the horrific genocidal policy of Israel against Gaza.
The EAA operates under Czech law, and criticism of a specific state, government, political ideology, or individual persons is a protected right, provided that such criticism is not generalised to an entire religious or ethnic group. This also constitutes a pillar of the right to freedom of speech affirmed by the European Commission (Title II, art. 11 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union). If you are informally or privately accused of any of the aforementioned hate-speech actions, remind the accuser that it is a serious allegation that could amount to slander and warrant a legal case if not retracted. If you are formally targeted with similar accusations, legal resources and support exist. Similarly, if you spot, become a target of, or are aware of discriminatory and hate-speech actions (including but not limited to islamophobia, terrorism/-support, among others) against yourself or other participants, please document these instances and reach out if you wish to ask for assistance.
We recognise that anyone who speaks up runs the risk of being targeted by a group of bad actors within the EAA. It is important that if you feel uncomfortable outing your name online or IRL, that it is ok. Remember you have a right to criticise any given state or government. More info in alt text.

BOYCOTT COMPLICIT INSTITUTIONS
Today is the 47th year that the world marks the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, recognising Palestinians’ inalienable right to self determination, sovereignty and independence from Israeli occupation. This year, Archaeologists Against Apartheid responded to the Palestinian civil society call to join the boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) movement.
Responding to this call-in from our colleagues in Palestine, we hope to provoke action within the discipline, that would increase pressure on the apartheid state of Israel, help stop Israel’s genocide, stop the culturicide, stop the scholasticide, stop the apartheid. Our representative organisations unfortunately do not share our same hopes for or solidarity with the Palestinian People.

Do not submit a session to the EAA until Eszter Banffy steps down as president of the EAA after her anti-democratic actions. There has been a concerted campaign of intimidation against individual members of the board, including large numbers of threatening and defamatory emails and individual participants, groups, and student volunteers have been intimidated. Even after close documentation of her shameful autocratic actions in the press and on social media, she refuses to step down. We cannot let this happen, this is not what we stand for as a community. Many departments and institutions already decided not to participate and submit sessions after it has become clear that the EAA has not resolved its issues. Do not submit a session until Banffy steps down. If you have already submitted a session, retract it.
