No real steps have been taken to salvage the conference in Athens, resulting in boycotts, and heartfelt withdrawals, such as those by the The Association of Greek Archaeologists: archaeol.gr/anoichti-epi...
The executive board wants to install a task force to discuss results, and the President and Secretary have announced to step down only after the Annual Meeting in Athens. Nothing has been said about Gaza. These responses are not sufficient.
The EAA votes are out
The great majority of our archaeological community has voted in favour of the petitions raised by #concernedEAA. We asked for a democratic process, we asked for accountability, and for the need to acknowledge the horrific genocidal policy of Israel against Gaza.
We recognise that anyone who speaks up runs the risk of being targeted by a group of bad actors within the EAA. It is important that if you feel uncomfortable outing your name online or IRL, that it is ok. Remember you have a right to criticise any given state or government. More info in alt text.
This action is being called due to ongoing: lack of transparency about processes before and during the Belgrade conference; bullying and intimidation of members by email and at meetings; releasing member information without consent. For more info, see: thepipeline.info/blog/categor...
A group of current and past EAA members and action groups are calling for a (first) Counter Conference open online meeting for all of you to join to get information, voice your concerns and discuss next steps (date TBA).
Share our call for a boycott of Athens. If you were planning to attend the conference, withdraw your sessions and papers now. To the local organizing committee, we support you, we are calling to you to put pressure on the executive board of the EAA and withdraw until the matter is resolved.
Members from 2025 and 2026 are entitled to vote in the per rollam vote circulated by the EAA Executive. Use your vote!
