Here in Seattle, furloughed NOAA employees were out in the pouring rain cleaning up beaches yesterday, part of a national week of service organized by federal workers who can't do their jobs due to the shutdown.

Our scoping review on climate change and nursing research is now available!
COVID is still out there folks. It finally caught me. So thankful for Paxlovid, even w the terrible taste. Please continue to mask in crowds and test when you’re feeling unwell. Fingers crossed for no rebound. #covid #mask #paxlovid
Fantastic show and thank you for speaking out
As I discussed in Talking Climate last year, research shows a four-day work week boosts productivity and well-being — AND cuts carbon! One study, for example, found a 10% drop in hours = 8.6% drop in emissions. So Jack's question below is a good one: why aren't we advocating for this more?
"For me, the answer now lies in refusal, the withdrawal of participation from systems that require dishonesty as the price of belonging."
Today I am resigning from the National Science Board and the Library of Congress Scholars Council.
I wrote about my decision in TIME.

"The movement must directly confront the polluters and the financial institutions that enable them..."
Reading Abolishing Fossil Fuels: Lessons from Movements That Won, recommended by a colleague, and it is giving me so much hope today.
The Louis Stokes NSF (LSAMP) grant at my college was terminated today. Such a terrible loss for our students and the future of STEM in the US
Just terrible- the LSAMP grant at my community college was terminated today. What a loss for our students and for the future of STEM
Drawdown of existing allocated funds should be okay; what's frozen are any new "funding actions"—yearly increments, additions to subawards, etc. Additionally, non-monetary actions like a no cost extension should still be possible.
Thanks for clarifying
4/4 But please don't stop with social media.
The NSF union letter has some great messaging tips for making calls & media outreach too (see below).
And don't underestimate the importance of engaging your local communities and media, esp representatives.
The time for action is RIGHT NOW!!
Thanks for your reporting on this. I do STEM education research and this means the community college faculty and students conducting research with us will not be paid for the work they’ve already done, let alone what they’re scheduled to do. Isn’t it illegal to not pay people for contracted labor?
BREAKING: NSF has frozen all grant funding, as of yesterday. It's unclear when they will resume funding awards, or why the pause has been put in place. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

I talked to the Seattle Times about how loss of our region's Climate Adaptation Science Center and NOAA Climate Adaptation Partnership would slash our capacity to support NW climate resilience.
“If the (centers) are eliminated, then our resource managers are going to be flying blind,” Krosby said."

Declaring emergencies to circumvent legal protections, in this case to justify logging national forests.
"The memo has the effect of declaring nearly 60% of all national forestlands to be in a state of emergency, thereby lifting the usual requirements for public comment and environmental review..."
Sediment people … does anyone have a recent price for a malvern 3000? Our malvern 2000 is not supported anymore and I think it may be time for a new instrument. Thanks!

Oooo this resonates. It was in 2000 when I was at COP6 that I first felt deep frustration at our so called leaders and the judiciary, regarding climate action and elections. It hasn’t deterred me, probably lit the fire, to continue to push for action on both fronts to today. Can’t deny, it’s tiring
Didn’t expect a Fee board meeting to bring me to the verge of tears. This slide is heart breaking. 42.4% of my students are food insecure and 43.1% are housing insecure in Seattle. Please donate to or find other ways to support your local #CommunityCollege. Our students are not okay.
Thank you - I needed this message today 💕
Here’s a link to our NSF participants’ climate justice with civic engagement integrated curriculum - we’re in the middle of the grant so more curriculum is on its way too CJUSTICE.org/currículum
The Mauna Loa CO₂ record is the most iconic time series in the environmental sciences. Trump and his enablers are trying to kill it.
Climate change is not a religion. We don’t have to believe in it to make it true.
We can say “I don’t believe in gravity” – but if we step off the cliff, we’re still going down. And if we take other people with us, we’re responsible.
