โ€ฆhe is a talented long-distance runner (coastal trail running, not road running) and is incredibly driven and motivated by his personal goals and challenges. We appreciate guidelines, but not everyone fits in the box. We work with him to plan his endurance events based on his ability.

Thanks for your concern. This was not an organised event. My son has been running since he was six years old & has been setting himself endurance challenges since the age of 8. He has to date completed 55km in 5 days, a half marathon, & recently a triathlon, having raised upwards of ยฃ8k for charity

A superb Scilly stormie session last night with 35 European storm-petrels ringed & released in just under two hours, a good total considering a 77% waxing moon.

Our small team of helpers did a brilliant job, several of them enjoying their first ever stormie experience ๐Ÿ™Œ

#WorldSeabirdDay Back in March I visited Fogo where, during c.50hrs birding at sea & a night of research in the foothills of Pico do Fogo, I enjoyed the most intimate of experiences with the ultimate seabird - the Feaโ€™s Petrel (Pterodroma feae).

A lifelong ambition fulfilled ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ป

More excellent pelagic birding off Scilly yesterday with 6 Wilsonโ€™s storm-petrels, 6 Coryโ€™s, 1 great & 1 sooty shearwater, amongst dozens of local Euro stormies & Manxies.

Getting โ€˜the big threeโ€™, & multiple Wilsonโ€™s in one photo frame, in June is absurd!

Wilsonโ€™s storm-petrels are steadily making their way in. Three on tonightโ€™s Scilly Pelagic - two moulting adults and one fresh juv. - alongside 30 or so European storm-petrels. Two early Sabineโ€™s gulls were a welcome bonus #ScillyPelagics #ScillyBirds #Seabirds

Tenerife blue chaffinch at Las Lajas yesterday. Bold, charismatic, vocal and confidingโ€ฆ they lived up to the hype! 5-6 birds in total around the drinking pools and picnic area.

Nice surprise only a couple of hours after arriving in Cornwall yesterday evening finding a gull-billed tern at Loe Pool. Always distant in poor light, but a cool bird nonetheless.

Ironically the last one in Britain was just 100 yards from my front door, at Porthcressa last August! #CornwallBirds

An exceptional first 3 (of 7) days pelagic seabirding off Fogo, Cape Verde with 18+ hours spent at sea and c.150km traveled so far.

Many highlights, but this mornings black-capped petrels steal the headlinesโ€ฆ undoubtedly the best ever views of the species in the Western Palearctic!

First day on Fogo & an early morning seawatch from our Sรฃo Filipe apartment balconyโ€ฆ no less than five minutes in & a black-capped petrel flies through my scope!! Large numbers of Feaโ€™s petrels, Cape Verde shearwaters, red-billed tropicbirds, and a Boydโ€™s shear also. This afternoon we go to sea ๐ŸŒŠ

โ€ฆin all, and from over 18 months of research and planning prior to the first trip last year, I believe the current set-up is the most affordable, efficient, reliable and environmentally responsible way of running British trips to the shelf edge. Nonetheless, Iโ€™ll always consider other options ๐Ÿ˜

11.03.2025 20:39 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Availability is an issue, but there are survey vessels and small expedition cruises that would be suitable. However given some of the pricing Iโ€™ve come across, cost per person would be considerably more than weโ€™re currently payingโ€ฆ

11.03.2025 20:33 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

โ€ฆhowever, there is some scope for something larger scale, i.e. a small cruise, but that comes with its own challenges. Iโ€™ve looked in to it, but thereโ€™s no immediate plans to run such a trip.

11.03.2025 20:18 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Duration and cost wonโ€™t change much with the current set up and scale. Our sailing yacht is currently the cheapest charter option possible to take ten of us out there. The current duration gives us five days โ€˜on siteโ€™, plus travel time. A narrow window there is just too risky re weatherโ€ฆ

This pied crow initially arrived on St. Maryโ€™s for a day in late December before returning in February, settling in Old Town where it has been residing now for the past fortnight.

Some interesting decisions to be made on the recent โ€˜influxโ€™ of the species in to Europe!

I have one space available on the 2025 Challenger Expedition to the continental shelf edge. The 2024 trip yielded Madeiran storm-petrels, barolo shearwaters, a feaโ€™s-type petrel & much more, all in British waters. Sept 14th-22nd from Plymouth.
