Sorry, Charlie. Simply doesn't work for me. There needs to be some kind of possessive link otherwise the instruction is, at best, telling me to put synonyms for those three words ahead of, presumably, something else. I don't see plurals or 'and' making your case I'm afraid.

Gosh. That is a pleasant surprise. Publishing on a Friday does not normally lead to a CS solve. I shall look forward to it.

Thanks for giving this a go, Liari. Sorry to have missed the live stream but enjoyed watching the video. And, yes, geezer is just a bloke where I come from ...

Very enjoyable, Dan, from start to finish. There's a theme ???

And that's only his barred puzzles; he'll have just as many normal cryptics and then a bunch of minis!

Not the main point of your post but isn't it also delightful to see the kind of thing that passed for advertising hype back then: "Jules - the noted house for permanent waving" is hardly a screamer.

A rare sighting of JH outside a pub?
Good luck to all competitors, esp those who have travelled so far.

Ha. Just looked at the clue in question. Neat and, yes, I approve!

Dammit - I shall have to do the puzzle now!

Splendid puzzle, Will. So glad it appeared eventually. 16d is very neat indeed and 19a a fun idea.

Also Ho for house and Br for bridge. More coincidence, I guess

Just to be clear, I know the origin is OS maps. I'm just checking that it is acceptable given that the abbreviation appears not to have ported over into the dictionary.

My turn to ask the counsel of fellow cruciverbalists. I was astounded to discover today, via a test-solver, that PH is not in the dictionaries for public house. Yet PH, frequently clued by 'bar' or 'local', has often been used in published puzzles. Is it acceptable despite no dictionary support?
25.06.2025 10:49 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 11 π 0
I've been tempted by it but cannot persuade myself that it means' source' or 'origin' in the sense of 'first'.

When I did the C2C back in the early 80's there was a point in the Pennines where two (quiet) metalled roads ran parallel for a mile or so, about a mile apart. Wainright - of course - had us traipsing the glutinous bog that separated them. That was a Slow Way, for sure!

My paternal grandfather was known to the family as 'Pop' so no US indicator needed for me!

Ah. I see. I honestly had assumed it was a term in use in the US for a hitman or the like; just one I hadn't encountered in that context, let alone in a UK one.

Very smooth and typical of this setter's work: a simple construction, neatly hidden by a succinct and silky surface.

I guess one of the problems is that, even with Collins' support, 'offer' in the sense you are using it is, at least as far as this solver is concerned, rarely used this side of the pond. I have only ever seen it thus used in crosswords - normally attended by the Americanism debate.

St Arkers - the patron saint of naturists?
Not to be confused with St Reakers who was gone in a flash

That's nice - but I go onto a call with a client in 10 minutes! Shame. Might be able to get the call done in an hour and join you then but doubt I'll make it any earlier than that. Hope you enjoy it whenever you choose to solve.
