One thing to note about this Smithsonian executive order is that Trump canβt actually order the Smithsonian to do anything because the Smithsonian is not under the control of the executive. Itβs a quasi-independent creature of Congress that is held in the public trust.

Parks Group Condemns Erasure of LGBTQ+ History from Park Service Website
The federal government is undermining National Park Service efforts to maintain an accurate and objective accounting of our countryβs history.
It looks like the source of this reporting is the National Parks Conservation Association, which has made a public statement & archived an important NPS LGBTQ history publication on their own website. Good on them. www.npca.org/articles/714...

NPS takes down web pages dedicated to transgender activists and LGBTQ history
This is part of an ongoing move by the federal government to remove and alter National Park Service webpages related to LGBTQ history.
Appears that more pages have been taken down since I did my deep dive a couple weeks ago. The NPS website is used by a wide variety of history professionals as well as the general public; the impacts of this censorship will be felt. www.npr.org/2025/03/05/n...

This is fantastic - @madycast.com is developing a bot to automate the discovery of LGBTQ+ censorship on federal websites.

The only bright side is that these losers know nothing about the work these agencies do and are doing a laughably shoddy job as censors

Sharing this here in case it's helpful to anyone following. I'm a librarian and I frequently use history pages created by federal agencies - this erasure is chilling.

I'm a librarian and created this account to share missing LGBTQ+ cultural heritage content on nps.gov (and elsewhere if I find it). I'm not an expert in digital archives, just a concerned queer trying to document attempts to erase our history.

I noticed that additional LGBTQ+ content on nps.gov had been purged and couldn't find a roundup, so I started tracking dead links. I hope it's okay that I'm sharing here, in case it's helpful to anyone.
15.02.2025 01:15 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0
As has been reported widely elsewhere, a number of other pages on nps.gov have been censored, with "transgender" and "LGBTQ" being removed. The censorship is sloppy, rushed, and incomplete; other content is still available (for now).
