I have no idea who else would think about running, but criticizing the war in Iran early seems like a real option for these potential candidates.
Obama in '08 is the obviously corollary and you'd think anyone thinking about running should be strategic enough to think about this. Obama benefited from not being in the Senate for the Iraq vote, but he was able to leverage that to win a large faction in the party.
If you stick close to Trump and his agenda, what is your case for why you and not Vance? The war in Iran seems like a pretty obvious opportunity for this. Vance and Rubio own this thing. If it goes how we all think it will and is a public opinion disaster, this could be an opportunity.
I've been thinking about this and I'm not sure I can articulate it right. If you are a Republican thinking about running for president, you have to be able to make a case that you are better than Vance and Rubio (sounds like a low bar, but you have to convince Republican voters).
