Your independent shop can't see anything until you physically bring the car in, and even then they're paying thousands a year for specialty tools and paywalled service info just to do the detective work the car already did. Ford wants $2,834.95 for the manual to your car! Nuts.

But most automakers are going the other direction. Your car is constantly phoning home, sending codes, sensor readings, and maintenance alerts. But instead of giving the data to the owner, they're using it to feed their dealer's systems.

Tesla is at the leading edge of remote diagnostics, and they're making a huge amount of data available to vehicle owners. That's the power of remote diagnostics done right. Tesla makes their software available to owners and independent shops. You can actually see what your car sees. Pretty sweet!

I borrowed a friend's old Tesla Model S last week. The low voltage battery died and the car went completely unresponsive, locking me out.
While I was still standing there trying to figure out what to do, my friend called me. "Hey, I just got an alert from my car that the battery is low."
