It's your car. You're generating the data. You should be able to choose who uses that info to fix your car. https://dub.sh/jvCnAwz

A new PIRG report calls this a two-tier repair economy. Dealers get a head start not because they're better mechanics, but because they have better information. That's driven auto repair costs up 44% over the last five years.

Your independent shop can't see anything until you physically bring the car in, and even then they're paying thousands a year for specialty tools and paywalled service info just to do the detective work the car already did. Ford wants $2,834.95 for the manual to your car! Nuts.

But most automakers are going the other direction. Your car is constantly phoning home, sending codes, sensor readings, and maintenance alerts. But instead of giving the data to the owner, they're using it to feed their dealer's systems.

Tesla is at the leading edge of remote diagnostics, and they're making a huge amount of data available to vehicle owners. That's the power of remote diagnostics done right. Tesla makes their software available to owners and independent shops. You can actually see what your car sees. Pretty sweet!

I borrowed a friend's old Tesla Model S last week. The low voltage battery died and the car went completely unresponsive, locking me out.
While I was still standing there trying to figure out what to do, my friend called me. "Hey, I just got an alert from my car that the battery is low."

You are most welcome. The world isn't going to fix itself!

The fight goes on--we still have a long way to go.

Apple's C1 modem isn't on the bleeding edge of chip fabrication technology but it comes darn close and it's fascinating to see under x-rays.

CDT applauds Washington State House on overwhelming passage of HR 1483, giving consumers #RightToRepair electronic equipment at their chosen service provider, without manufacturers throwing obstacles in the way. Looking forward to Senate passage and enactment into law. lawfilesext.leg.wa.g...

Access to the information about how to fix our things should be as widely distributed as the things themselves are.

Really thrilled at the reaction to the #BuyNow film, I had a great time working on it. We're starting to break out into the mainstream with our fight to make things last longer.

That movie, #BuyNow, is out on Netflix today. We learnd some wild things along the way. I will never think about buying things the same again.

Two years ago, a filmmaker approached me with an idea. They wanted to explore why we were stuck on this treadmill of buying more and more things.

We went on a journey together that took us from the halls of Congress to an unlikely gathering of fixers in California.
