Probably the most fun I had recording a podcast! Thanks to @giagia.co.uk and Tim Vermeulen for inviting me to come on and ramble about #fandoms and #fancultures!

Bridgerton and Period Drama Fandom’s Enduring Racism Problem — Fansplaining Complaints about historical accuracy and acting quality are often dog-whistles: some fans only want to see white actors—and white history—on screen.

Bridgerton, @amandaraeprescott.bsky.social writes, is part of a long history of racism in period drama fandoms. "They don’t just want to deny BIPOC fans the same level of escapism white fans have enjoyed for years—they want to put an end to any BIPOC actors appearing in period dramas, full stop."

Going down the scholarship rabbit hole as I revamp my Media Fandom and Identity course for the Spring Term. Yet another reason I wish we were on the semester system: so I can cover more of the work from scholars I admire.

It’s the first time I assigned a mini podcast series as the final project in my Black American Media course. Some of the topics: The Wiz, Bessie Smith, Michael Jackson, Tupac, films by Jordan Peele, Kendrick Lamar, Tyler the Creator, etc. Looking forward to listening to them over the next four days.

It was finals week this week. In addition to grading, I was asked to review graduate applications, and prepare to submit my syllabi by Monday. This is in addition to meetings, etc. Finals week is not down time so why the extra? I have never felt more overwhelmed. More grading to do this weekend…

It was a slow build up for me that was exacerbated by the COVID pandemic and the aftermath of flexibility mandates that didn’t mean students turned in any better work. So now, I’m reducing higher stakes assignments so that I can mitigate my anxiety.

One day we are going to talk about all the time spent considering long term effects of COVID on students while no one bothered to study if teachers and faculty also experienced intense psychological/emotional distress and lasting physical and cognitive symptoms in our less elastic brains and bodies

I just had a situation where I had well over 200 of my 296 students in a class and asked them to complete the evals. I’d return when we hit a 60% response rate. After 20 mins they didn’t reach 50%. They just refused to do it no matter the amount of prodding. It was absurd.

I’ve wondered similarly if it’s not necessarily being an academic that’s the problem but the type of position and where I am that is. So it’s encouraging to see someone try again somewhere else and find joy in it again. (Often, I’m ready to say higher ed isn’t for me.) Enjoy your end of the year!

Grading is that thing that broke me during the summer. It paralyzed me. I just couldn’t do it. Luckily, I’m working on it now but it triggers anxiety and then avoidance. It requires more time and effort since many students don’t or can’t follow instructions or never learned how to write. It’s sad.

Me: excited to see the #SCMS acceptances for folks. Also me: VERY sad that the conference is the first week of my Spring term so I have to miss being in a community I adore and my second home city that I love, Chicago. 😭
