I know the answer!
In many dramas and soap operas of the era, fitting all members of a conversation into the aspect ratio the show was shot in required some careful /creative positioning.
People would be in what would normally be uncomfortably close or odd angles IRL but look fine on tv
Again this is all just "grumpy man complains on the internet about microtransactions encouraging perverse design incentives on a platform where that previously wasn't a problem".
Avatar Marketplace is probably salvageable, though I doubt they'll do much with it anytime soon.
They've done very well with VRC+ IMO, it's a compelling offer now, but they straight up can't seem to figure out how to allow *users* to make money on-platform in a way that doesn't feel like it just makes things slightly worse than it was before.
18.08.2025 19:59 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 3 ๐ 0The complaint about VRChat's monetization priorities was mostly tangential, as HOW creators monetize worlds is up to them.
It's just that when they announce a new feature like the Avatar Marketplace, it's a kind of crap MVP and filled with weird decisions that they can't figure out how to do PR for

ANYWAY no more ranting for now. Check out all these great friends who I love

It reminded me a little too much about some of the most unpleasant people I've worked with in gamedev. I don't like seeing it in VRC.

18.08.2025 05:54 โ ๐ 4794 ๐ 1491 ๐ฌ 66 ๐ 21I'm fine with people selling things. Full experiences, add-ons and expansions, even skins and cosmetics. I'm actually usually fine with this.
An intermediary currency for consumable items? No. Way far beyond the line, and incentivizes design to be JUST frustrating enough to drive players to it.
Like it reminds me of an afterparty for event I worked where the big money guy paying for it talked about all the mobile games he loved and why he admires their financial success and everyone in the room would just shift uncomfortably because designing what he was describing was our collective hells
18.08.2025 12:02 โ ๐ 5 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0As somebody who is just now getting into the weeds of VRC development, I feel like my best option to maintain my sanity and happiness is to not engage with the wider community and just be a hermit, only occasionally returning to throw my work out into society.
18.08.2025 11:53 โ ๐ 7 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 3 ๐ 0Most of all I was angry about the person's EXCITEMENT over this. I would not be able to bring myself to build something like it, I just ethically can't accept it.
Maybe I'm just old and out of touch, but this seems like a bad thing to me. Like the psychic damage that did to me was immense.
I am endlessly frustrated with the monetization methods that VRChat has chosen to prioritize for their platform. Why does every Creator Economy feature that comes out feel like the worst possible version of the concept, missing the mark or enabling perverse design incentives like these
18.08.2025 11:53 โ ๐ 9 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 0I do not mean to subpost but I gotta get off my chest how soul-crushing it was to see a VRC world creator excitedly announce that they added the ability to buy their in-world currency with VRC Credits (real world money) that users can spend on limited use items.

Been busy making a PAX Kiosk version of New Match City. Removing everything we don't need so people can walk up, push one button and start a game. I did decide to keep the deck editor. I think adjusting your deck before a game will be fun.

It's done.
Episode 9's premise had me worried but they pulled through the same way Lower Decks always does, with a genuine, optimistic take on the subgenre, a lot of heart and copious fanservice
I'm going to miss following along with this crew.
Goddamnit I'm doing the same thing I did with Lower Decks that I did with TNG where I never watched the last episode for years because I didn't want it to be over. I always wanted for there to be at least one more episode to watch.
I'm biting the bullet. I gotta finish it.

16.08.2025 23:12 โ ๐ 9212 ๐ 3061 ๐ฌ 8 ๐ 478screengrab of a portion of new yorker interview with former simpson's writer john swartzwelder: Mike Sacks: How much time and attention did you spend on these scripts? Another โSimpsonsโ writer once compared your scripts to finely tuned machinesโif the wrong person mucked with them, the whole thing could blow up. Swartzwelder: All of my time and all of my attention. Itโs the only way I know how to write, darn it. But I do have a trick that makes things easier for me. Since writing is very hard and rewriting is comparatively easy and rather fun, I always write my scripts all the way through as fast as I can, the first day, if possible, putting in crap jokes and pattern dialogueโโHomer, I donโt want you to do that.โ โThen I wonโt do it.โ Then the next day, when I get up, the scriptโs been written. Itโs lousy, but itโs a script. The hard part is done. Itโs like a crappy little elf has snuck into my office and badly done all my work for me, and then left with a tip of his crappy hat. All I have to do from that point on is fix it. So Iโve taken a very hard job, writing, and turned it into an easy one, rewriting, overnight. I advise all writers to do their scripts and other writing this way. And be sure to send me a small royalty every time you do it.
