21.01.2026 16:31 β π 206 π 110 π¬ 3 π 10this is a very good feature about how one town in China fully reoriented itself to become the dominant crystal supplier in the world. a microcosm of why china is so good at manufacturing things & has become the leader in cornering all sorts of niche markets:

One of the first things anyone learns about facial recognition is that it is often wrong and that it is biased. And yet ICE is using it all day every day to determine legal status & who to detain. And now we have a high-profile example of it being flat out wrong:

extremely broad and alarming drone no fly zone designed to protect ICE agents just dropped. notable in part because some folks have used drones to film law enforcement abuses:

19.01.2026 18:24 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0New from 404 Media: ICE's facial recognition app, which the agency is using to decide who to detain and deport, misidentified a woman. Twice.
ICE says results of the app are definitive and override a birth certificate; obviously this case shows the app is inaccurate

"Aren't you scrolling on this Chinese app, probably on a Chinese made phone, wearing clothes that are made in China, collecting dolls that are from China?"

New: meet ELITE, the Palantir app ICE is using to find neighborhoods to raid. Map interface; officers search for immigrants; click person to bring up individual dossier. This is clearest link between what Palantir is building and ICE's activities on the ground yet www.404media.co/elite-the-pa...

14.01.2026 16:00 β π 450 π 107 π¬ 6 π 11As others have pointed out and one of the main points of doing this piece: This woman has her own surveillance cameras, a car with cameras in it, and the resources to pull and show her own exonerating evidence. Most don't have that & surveillance disproportionately pointed at people who don't
14.01.2026 16:16 β π 205 π 24 π¬ 3 π 0This is a clip of the officer's phone call with her. Whole thing is worth watching bc it's nuts & shows the cops love their surveillance toys, how infallible they think they are, and how they hold it over the heads of the people they surveil. whole thing here:

βYou know we have cameras in that town. You canβt get a breath of fresh air in or out of that place without us knowing,β Milliman told Elser and her husband at her home, referring to Flock automated license plate reader cameras in the nearby town of Bow Mar. He then told her the townβs Flock cameras had recorded her vehicle entering and leaving the town 20 times in the last month, including on Tuesday, September 22 βfrom 11:52 until 12:09, exactly,β he said. βLike I said, nothing gets in or out of the town without us knowing about it β¦ I have you on camera walking up, ringing the doorbell, taking the package, and literally running away. I have you on camera doing this β¦ I get that this is a shock to you, but I am telling you, this is a lock, 100 percent no doubt she did this.β
Basically, he shows her a single printed out sheet of paper that shows her car totally devoid of context and tells her that "this is a lock, 100% no doubt." In a follow up call, she says she has her own evidence but he refuses to look at it and yells at her
14.01.2026 15:42 β π 156 π 20 π¬ 1 π 0This incident was first reported by the Colorado Sun, which had footage from her Ring doorbell. They've done great work on this and you should support them.
