it's hard to convey the mirage at work here, which began before she was shot. not only was the shooting unnecessary, so was the interaction before it. ICE didn't need to be at that location, nor in minneapolis. there is no need for ICE at all. the need is constructed, the cruelty is real.

there's a self-protective instinct that causes so many people to defend the state in moments of terror. it's so much easier to think renee good had nefarious intentions — or even made an unfortunate mistake — than it is to think "they will kill without reason, and they would kill me too."
