Developed countries have promised huge increases in climate finance aid to help poor nations recover from climate disasters. Some of that money is just renamed development aid โ€“ and has funded projects like airport expansions with LED lighting and an ice cream company's expansion. buff.ly/hCh8p0l

โ€œStaggeringโ€ Water Loss Driven by Groundwater Mining Poses Global Threat A new study finds that freshwater resources are rapidly disappearing, creating arid โ€œmegaโ€ regions and causing sea levels to rise.

Nearly 6 billion people live in the 101 countries that a recent study has identified as confronting a net decline in water supply โ€” signaling enormous challenges for food production and a heightening risk of conflict and instability.

I'd really recommend doing this, especially if you have the opportunity to visit a 19 Century graveyard. Not only will you be shocked at how many babies and young children are there, but there will also be a sad and surprising number of women of childbearing age.

Trump Shoots the Messenger Firing the BLS Commissioner moves us into banana republic territory

New, from me:
Trump just fired the head of the BLS, accusing her of rigging data.
The reality is that by shooting the messenger reporting on the negative effects of his economic policies, Trump pushed America further into banana republic territory.

Whatโ€™s a technology that you think is overhyped?

Iโ€™m going to give a sideways answer to this, which is that the venture capital business model needs to be understood as requiring hype. You can go back to the Netscape IPO, and that was the proof point that made venture capital the financial lifeblood of the tech industry.

Venture capital looks at valuations and growth, not necessarily at profit or revenue. So you donโ€™t actually have to invest in technology that works, or that even makes a profit, you simply have to have a narrative that is compelling enough to float those valuations. So you see this repetitive and exhausting hype cycle as a feature in this industry. A couple of years ago, you would have been asking me about the metaverse, then last year, you would have asked me about Web3 and crypto, and for each of these inflection points thereโ€™s an Andreessen Horowitz manifesto.

Itโ€™s not simply that one piece of technology is overhyped, itโ€™s that hype is a necessary ingredient of the current business ecosystem of the tech industry. We should examine how often the financial incentive for hype is rewarded without any real social returns, without any meaningful progress in technology, without these tools and services and worlds ever actually manifesting. Thatโ€™s key to understanding the growing chasm between the narrative of techno-optimists and the reality of our tech-encumbered world.

Yes, SEVEN billion

Basically, equal to Indonesia's emissions over that period
