And the system was one where you hit a model with the same WS on a 5+. So it was really quite hard to beat.

The town 1,500 living residents and 1,500,00 dead residents is willing a Wraith the Oblivion source book into existence just by describing it.

Instead of being shocked at how few of the English are dead, shocked at how few of my high quality posts have taken off.

Gorton and Denton could be one of those two model character units from Warmachine.

Lots of aspects of Mussolini's final days are funny. Not least the bit who has spent 20 years putting his face on everything tries to disguise himself by wearing a hat.

Allegedly Mussolini's last words were "shoot me in the heart" to the partisan firing squad sent to execute him, and I have always thought that, under the circumstances, the funny thing to do would have been to instead shoot him right in the penis.

Yep. He's talking about the coinage and also what Einhard says about him.

If anything was going to get me to play modern 40k, it would be the idea of just playing little games of combat patrol.

I think im remembering that quote right....im doubting myself now.

Anyway- Roger Collins says Chalremagne looked like Obelix and that is also good and there should be more of that type of thing from academics.

Its sort of a joke! A joke that ellucidates!

The article "plunder and tribute in the carolingian empire" by Rueter is a key text on the carolingians, and one of the reasons its so good is that it explains the shift to a tribute system as conquered territories being "invited to plunder themselves" which is just a banging way of explaining it.

This is such a transformed game- its like that bit in Dumbo where he's given the "magic" feather to make him believe he can fly and so he can, except instead of flying it's being able to cross the gain line by two metres.

Now I think of it, that premise would make a good My Life With Master style rpg- playing as the brigands who've ended up in a fhaos warband, and not the champions.

Thats good to hear. RoC style warbands come up a few times in my era of story. I started writing my own fiction trying to tell a story from the POV not of the champion but of the mooks in his retinue, maybe ill finish it one day!

All of the first run of Futurama was an experiment in how high you could get the joke to time ratio of a show before it was anything else.

Yeah, you could imagine everyone with an end zone card in the box was probably consulted on and then like...the mongrel horde he had free range on.

My guess was left free to invent but based on existing WFB fashions. I feel like the team colour schemes match the Warhammer Fantasy Regiments quite well.( Apart from elves who were their own glam rock thing).

Although I wonder if the team profiles existed before the art.

Some one did a modern one that was on warhammer community. Comes up if you Google Albion Wanderers.

The Slaanesh Castellan - a hedonism bot if you will.

Tbf- the Castellan is the most vanilla choice for an legion cybernetic robot to have sex with. The true pervert would choose the mantis looking one.Or the one whose hand is a big lump hammer.

This has reminded me that GW suggested that you might want to paint your robots like the Albion Wanderers from Blood Bowl

The nostalgia used to be better back in the day...

20.02.2026 15:45 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 0    📌 0

And, like any nostalgia activity, there were guys when i first started who remembered that the models used to be even cheaper and they never paid more than £5 for a mini.

They had a point: I sold a chaos battering ram in 2007 for about £18 that would be worth £100s today.

I got into Oldhammer collecting about 12 years ago, and one of the things that acts as a tell for how much its exploded as a special interest since then is the way that models like this have rocketed in price. I think i bought these for about £17 in2014..less for the guy with someone else's arms.

20.02.2026 15:26 — 👍 12    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 1

With this guy's aesthetic and obsessions, his beautiful wife, and the names of his supporting cast of characters, you've got a Wes Anderson film right there...Albeit one with a very fucked final act.

I can just picture the symmetrical shot of his and Teddy Roosevelt's farms facing each other.
