Today was my last day in school for a while as I went in to clear out my classroom! Feels so strange when you've been dedicated to something for so long to say goodbye (even it is only temporarily). I won't miss being pregnant whilst teaching... it's been an unbelievably hard mix! #maternityleave

A very exciting opportunity to come and join the History team at Sawston Village College. We have recently been awarded Gold Quality Mark status by the Historical Association and our GCSE results are top 1% value added (+1.6)... ce0976li.webitrent.com/ce0976li_web...

Great way of examining how loud voices are in archives. I love the idea that this highlights the construction of history as well as the stories within it!

Looking forward to sharing some of our ideas on evidential thinking next Saturday at 11.25am. We will explore how we have incorporated Trouillot's ideas of silences into an enquiry on the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Come along to @ttrhistory.bsky.social's free online event!

Working on some CPD work on Reading strategies in the History classroom. Produced this inspired by some of the excellent work from @historysuperfan.bsky.social

Great to see the ideas being used! Currently working on an updated, shorter one focussed on delivery of reading myself for all staff which I'll post soon 😊

Really excited to be taking on the baton with Jessie Phillips of the HA 'Embracing Messiness' series led by @richkhistory.bsky.social and @hughrichards.bsky.social. Session 3 is all about interpretations! Come along for lots of interpretations thinking, enquiry suggestions and practical activities.

I've just added another section which I just realised I forgot to add to the blog post initially! πŸ™ˆ This one is about how to read in the classroom once you've planned!

Thanks Ed! I just realised I missed out a whole section on initial posting so hopefully you still agree with the words in the final part too! And absolutely with KS4 too (we don't have KS5) - we've gradually moved this way and our results were the best ever this year (particularly SEND and PP).

Reading in the History classroom: why, what and how? – Metaphors and Meanings

Finally got round to finishing my blog on the why, what and how of reading in the History classroom! I've tried to keep it as practical as possible with strategies that have worked really well in our context: metaphorsandmeanings.co.uk/2024/09/22/r...

So sad to hear the news about Helen Snelson today. I did my PGCE in York and I was absolutely in awe of Helen during every single one of her sessions. An unforgettable role model and inspiration. The History teaching community will not be the same without her.

I'm so glad these sessions are running! Feels like the discussion in the last few years has been focussed on the substantive (and rightly!) but disciplinary thinking needs to be at the heart of our planning. Hugh and Rich's HA conference session was great - so really looking forward to this series!
