Have you done any Kmer spectra analyses on the short read data Dan? That might give some clues as to whatβs going on.
Let me invite you to some cool posters this upcoming poster session at #ESEB2025
P02.034 - Sam Ebdon on faster X meeting whacky reproduction in globular springtails
P02.201 - @jamesimcc.bsky.social on genome evolution of Sedges
P02.049 - and myself about evolution of dipteran karyotypes
Re-upping this thread on PGE in mealybugs because the results are finally published in Molecular Ecology:

Interested to read a perspective by >160 reproductive biologists? The new Tree of Sex white paper is out! Led by
@danjeffries.bsky.social π
We now have a starter pack for the Tree of Sex consortium! Interested in reproduction (not just sex) in eukaryotes? Get involved!
Many thanks to @ajmongue.bsky.social for putting this together!
Fellow Europeans, it's time to move away from using American technology and software. Using European and open source alternatives makes us more sovereign and safe, and reduces the influence of Trump-supporting technology oligarchy.
Here's a good guide for finding European alternatives.
If you're interested in the evolution of sex determination, check out this opinion piece from Tom Kocher, @tonygamble.bsky.social , @behrenskristen.bsky.social , Will Gammerdinger, and me. We argue that genetic variation in sex determination is probably more prevalent that most people think.
There are a lot of new people here, so I've set up a starter pack on Mating Systems, including sexual selection and conflict, sex differences and determination. Let me know if you want to be added! go.bsky.app/QXrYoQY
Genetics Starter Pack 2
Some accounts I canβt believe I missed the first time, self-nominees, and recent arrivals. If I still missed you, Iβm probably sorry. Maybe you can post starter pack 3.

Genomics, evolution, and more starter pack!
Help build community with this starter pack.
This list is currently incomplete. Want to be included? Reply and I will remedy that!

Would love to be added, thanks π

Would love to be added. Thanks for putting it together π
Yeh good point. TEs not slowing on Ys might be due to the lower gene density. Most will probably insert into other repeats. So reduced selection against new TEs in degenerated Ys could explain why thereβs no slow down(?). No idea why they donβt colonise mt though, maybe mechanistic explanation?
+1 for this answer! Yβs lose dosage insensitive genes rapidly after recomb loss. Degeneration slows a lot as the gene content reduces to those genes which canβt be lost. So all about strength of purifying selection for me
Hi, I'm Jaime and I've been working for 8 years for the Wikimedia Foundation. The following are personal views and do not represent in any way the position of the Foundation (I don't and cannot speak on behalf of it). However, you may have seen this question by Mr. Musk and I wanted to respond A π§΅:
Let us be clear: This is a fraught moment, and one that has polarized not only Americans but people all over the world. It demands incredible sensitivity and strict adherence to journalistic standards of objectivity, and simply put, that is something we arenβt willing to do.
Our Dept is hiring two TT faculty positions. Very broad search that has been delineated into two positions. I'm on both committees, happy to answer questions.
