It’s certainly a great game but it is very frustrating to play because if you so much as sneeze at the wrong time you just die.

It’s much harder than the original hollow knight and they make you pay to unlock save points with a currency you lose when you die.

Man Silksong is way too punishing of a game. Absolutely brutal game right from the start.

It’s really fun but the story and writing are some of the worst in the series. The gameplay is fantastic though

The other thing here is that - games are team projects. Having an editor to work in and author different parts is hugely important.

Authoring experience makes all the difference and that’s a lot of work!

I don’t think you can’t make a game without an engine, but saying that it makes no difference to start with or without an engine is disingenuous at best.

You put a ton of work into your engine and it suits your game style well, but it doesn’t scale to all genres and art styles.

I skimmed through this (cool video btw), but I think you’re oversimplying the task here

1. You’re using software rendering which can be fine for 2d, but is not a scalable solution for 3d

2. Your build system is a lot of work! Most devs don’t have the patience to build that

It’s not the same amount of work to start with no engine.

How do you deal with cross platform builds? Ui? Input? Profiling? Physics? What about rendering?

Engines are a ton of work, and if you’re building one from scratch for your game you’re going to spend way more time on tech than gameplay.

I feel like at this point I have a pretty strong grasp of concurrency in swift 5 now, and I really like it.

You have actors guard state, and you can setup streams to act like data highways between them.

It’s so fast and it’s easier to reason about than most other paradigms.

So this looks fun - but they also need to have a solution for craning your neck looking down for hours.

Please let the map be projected forward, or at 45 degrees. VR still has ergonomics issues to sort out…

@reckless.bsky.social since you all released support for subscriptions on the verge, I can't scroll down articles at all on firefox. Hope you all give that a look!

Did you know that Unity has an ECS race sample that uses netcode for entites and Unity physics?

Physics based online racing is so hard to do well, and it just works out of the box here!

It’s true - I have a 4090 and ray tracing is incredible, but to get full path tracing, you need a 4090 class gpu, so we’re still a ways out for most consumers to afford to experience it.

Pretty much all subscription / licensed apps have this downside.

I hear you, it’s just unfortunate that everyone defaults to assuming every worst intention from every decision.

You’re welcome to use any software you like - I think Unity is still pretty great, especially for XR.

If you’re working on your own game that really shouldn’t happen.

That recent Reddit thread is an anomaly and I believe it was rectified rather quickly.

Most folks with problems are doing contract work with incorrect licenses.

There's nothing quite like polishing interactions in VR

I think that’s mostly that iteration time and asset imports get really long after enough art assets are in the project.

They’re definitely issues, but both are core things being solved in post u6.

To be fair, that screenshot isn’t exactly saying that Unity is terrible for AAA because of tech, but because the engine isn’t open source and free to be tailored for bespoke large titles.

Post u6 - CoreCLR, unified ECS & GameObjetcs, motion animation and new terrain will be a huge upgrade.
