Headed back from an EXCELLENT trip to @leizarchaeology.bsky.social. Matt will stay to finish his samples. But why zap shells with a laser? Sure, weโre figuring out what seasons these oysters were collected 200yrs ago, and from where in the estuary, but so what? #archaeology #ecology

How to stop the revolving door of German academia
Germany is one of the most popular destinations for students and scholars worldwide, but those pursuing academic careers face significant hurdles to success.
German academia: great place to work? You should think twice before giving it a try: Permanent positions are very rare, most scholars have to drop out after some precarious years. @dianakwon.bsky.social has written a great piece about this for @nature.com and also talked to yours truly. #IchBinHanna

I've written a few, mostly scholarly, but this is probably the most publicly accessible. A short book written to introduce readers to how archaeologists get stories out of dirt, bones, and broken things

tricky one. contemporaneity via 14C is one part, then compare species composition of the temporally overlapping periods with the rest of the original midden and see if that fits.
does the story change if it is two separate middens?

Usually this is done with 15-20 oxygen isotope samples/shell. Taking weeks of work. For Mattโs sample of oysters, this would usually cost $45k. Instead, it costs a trip to @leizarchaeology.bsky.social + a single oxygen sample/shell (to determine the salinity of the water the oyster grew) 3/3

Dear Bluesky,
www.thenerve.news is still tiny. We launched it with no dirty money (no money at all, lol!). But we're proving what's possible with a small expert team & no billionaire owners.
We knew the UK press wouldn't understand or properly cover this story, so we did. Thank you for the support!

Wherever we looked for the prominent flaggers and leaders of this movement, we found people smugglers and sex doll salesmen, people with dubious criminal pasts and people willing to put in a good word for Adolf Hitler.
