The US and Canada go to Daylight Savings Time tomorrow morning.
When there are no consequences for the last bad thing, you'll get a next worse thing.
What the genocide in Gaza reinforced is that there are no "civilians" when it comes to Israel and the United States. The rest of the world learned the same lesson and the consequences are going to be felt across the world.
Israel has launched an attack on Iran’s capital, with a cloud of smoke rising from downtown Tehran. The apparent strike happened near the offices of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
I really can’t not see this.
A lesson about networks that I’m kind of proud of: at the beginning of the year, I gave my 200 students a dumb survey: fav books, foods, etc. I told them they could use pseudonyms and that I’d share their responses with the class. We’ve been using that data in various ways: to make points about +
"Is there a technology the left is excited about?"
Let's see, off the top of my head:
- libraries
- solar power
- community-owned, community-run [noun], for example
• power grids
• communications networks
- e-bikes
- voting by mail
- vaccinations
- affordable health care
Notice any patterns?
Black History Month zine available @oaklibrary.bsky.social Magazines & Newspapers Room. The California Voice was a Black newspaper in Oakland that ran from 1919 to 20??. I went through 20 years of microfilm to find the coolest (mostly) local Black music coverage and ads in the paper. Dig it.
A small but very deep thing that bothers me about generative AI as a shortcut to practice and work and skill is the basic assumption that it’s impossible to take pleasure in a creative pursuit that you aren’t very good at and I assure you that is not the case
@fobettarh.bsky.social has made such a positive difference in the LIS field and a personal impact on many of us. We will feel her loss forever. Right now her family is asking for folks to please continue to donate to her gofundme to help cover costs. Please donate and share: gofund.me/6629f3bd9
my anger is still directed where it belongs, but I’m getting at least increasingly irritated that outlets like Status reporting extensively on the layoffs aren’t even bothering to note that the Post apparently fired every single one of of its remaining arts critics
thank you for everything you did for we here and for the library and information science profession, fobazi. you were an incredible friend, thinker, writer, supporter. you’ll be dearly missed 🤍
I’m heartbroken to hear this news. Fobazi has touched so many people and she will be missed so much. My thoughts are with her wife and family.
Apparently, Google Books deliberately removed search for previewed books??
For ANYONE doing research, this is a BIG deal.
Not to be able to search for specific things that you need? For books that will help? For references used by other authors?
My last book would have been impossible without it.

Leading American companies — including Palantir, Deloitte, and private prison giant GEO Group — raked in over $22B from ICE and CBP contracts last year.
Do not forget who is profiting from cruelty and human suffering.

You were incredible, Alice Wong, and it was a blessing to have collaborated with you on projects, to have read your words and to have heard your voice, as full of life and passion and joy and rage as it was.
You made a difference—so much of a difference.
Rest always in peace, and always in power.
I’m heartbroken to read this news. Alice was an amazing light and important voice. She will be missed by many. 💔

My teaching librarian friends, how are you doing? It’s been a lot. What a time to be out here trying to teach critical thinking and information literacy.
