Immigrant renters are being silenced by fear. Landlords exploit ICE threats & HUD’s new "data" demands to deny housing, hike fees & ignore repairs. Understandably, terror keeps tenants from exercising even the most basic of protections. This is wrong!

About 70 community members gathered in Watts for a town hall to hear why Councilmember Tim McOsker and the rest of the LA City Council must #CapTheRentAt3 %! We need Councilmember McOsker to take action as so many tenants are struggling with rent hikes that are increasingly unsustainable.

"Documenting harassment related to immigration status is important...But the most important thing tenants can do is organize with their neighbors, instead of trying to fight alone, to have some protection from deportation. This is an opportunity for people who are less vulnerable to support others."

The math on LA rent control doesn’t add up for actual tenants Los Angeles caps rent increases to protect tenants, but landlords are pocketing most of the extra money as profit while renters still can't afford to stay.

With 3% rent hike in effect, Los Angeles tenants call for City Council reform Tenant groups say the city’s rent increase formula is outdated and unaffordable, while landlords argue limits hurt small owners.

“It’s frustrating that the Council hasn’t taken action. People are struggling to pay between groceries, utilities, rents and making difficult choices that impact them. And our members’ number one concern is being evicted and becoming homeless.”

AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler issued the following statement in response to a Supreme Court order allowing the Trump administration to move forward with Reduction in Force (RIF) plans to fire hundreds of thousands of federal workers while litigation continues:

The Trump administration and its unaccountable DOGE have created chaos in hundreds of thousands of federal workers’ lives, and the Supreme Court just heaped on more pain. These are the workers who care for our veterans, make sure our food is safe to eat, protect our health and safety on the job and deliver the essential services we all rely on daily. They track and respond to natural disasters, support our public school educators and ensure our water is clean. Now, the Supreme Court has given the Trump-appointed authors of Project 2025 permission to throw these workers out of their jobs and cleared the way for even more mass firings while litigation proceeds.

The American people do not support this. By a 2-1 margin, people oppose the reckless firing of federal workers. And when 85% of federal workers live outside of D.C and 30% of federal workers are veterans, it’s working families across the country who will be harmed by allowing these firings to move forward—in ways we can’t even know yet.

This decision is a blow, but the litigation in this case—and the fight for federal workers and the essential services they provide—is far from over. We will continue to work with unions and allies to ensure all federal workers know how to exercise their rights. And we will continue to organize and support federal worker unions in their vital work, because it’s clear that a union contract is more important now than ever.

The Supreme Court has given Trump and DOGE permission to throw federal workers out of their jobs and cleared the way for even more mass firings. We’ll keep working and organizing to ensure federal workers know how to exercise their rights. This isn't over. aflcio.org/press/releas...

New rent increase caps start in LA as city delays updating rent control formula Most L.A. apartments are covered by the city’s decades-old rent control law. New limits on annual rent hikes take effect July 1 without reforms that have been waiting for a City Council vote.

"Starting Tuesday, rent increases for most apartment dwellers in Los Angeles will be capped at 3% or up to 5% if utilities are included. The new limits are taking effect at a time when the L.A. City Council continues to put off voting on a plan to update the city’s decades-old rent control formula."

ICE raids lead to another crisis for immigrant workers and families: How to pay rent Two-thirds of undocumented households were already burdened by L.A. housing costs. With breadwinners locked up and workplaces closed, paying rent is only getting harder.

“This could have the result of increasing homelessness for entire families.”

Christina Boyar, an attorney with Public Counsel and a Keep LA Housed member, said minor policy tweaks can greatly affect housing stability:

“While it may seem like a small difference, [an extra 1% or 2% each year] is hundreds of dollars for working families who are already struggling.”

"KLAH wants to let [LA's] allowable increases go as low as 0% in years with flat or negative inflation and end the 10% bump landlords are allowed to charge when tenants bring additional residents into their household. If the council fails to act, rents will be allowed to rise between 3% and 5%."

Losing your home, losing your school: how evictions affect kids' educational trajectories Kids whose parents face eviction cases are more likely to leave their district, end up in schools with fewer resources, and experience an increase in absences and suspensions.

"Nearly three million children risk losing their homes every year through the eviction process....Even the threat of eviction can increase the odds of school moves and disenrollment, moves to worse-off schools, and increased school absences and suspensions."

Preliminary Analysis: Eviction Filing Patterns in 2024 The days of emergency rental assistance and eviction protections are long gone. Now, our data show that landlords are filing evictions at nearly the same levels as before 2020.

"By contrast, during 2024 evictions became more common in more than half of the cities that [the Eviction Lab] tracks. Of the 35 cities in the ETS, 19 had a higher eviction filing rate in 2024 than was typical before the pandemic."
