When organizations build relationships with marginalized communities, then ghost us when decisions get legally complicated, they reveal what inclusion really meant to them: performance, not partnership.
After years of “we want your voice,” I wasn’t even told this policy was coming. I found out like every other fan.
The neglect at the moment it mattered most is what stings the hardest. When they needed community voices to navigate this decision, we were shut out completely.
For 3 years I participated in CITY SC’s CITY Moves program, helping build inclusive supporter culture. Last week they announced a policy restricting trans flags and BLM banners - without consulting any of the community partners they’d spent years cultivating.
