The contrast couldn't be more powerful: a man who would have once been denied civil liberties now standing longer and louder than a man who tried to silence millions.

Where Thurmond once used the floor to deny civil rights, Booker used it to defend them - flipping the legacy of the filibuster on its head.

🎙️ Why it mattered:

Senator Booker stood against far-right policies advanced by the Trump administration and its allies, including rollbacks on healthcare access, immigration protections, and reproductive freedom.

🕯️ But history doesn’t stand still.

📣 In April 2025, that record was finally broken by New Jersey’s Senator, Cory Booker, a Democrat and a man of color, who spoke for 25 hours straight in defense of democracy, civil rights, and human dignity.

- 24 hours and 18 minutes of racist obstruction by Senator Strom Thurmond, trying to block the Civil Rights Act of 1957. A segregationist who fought to deny Black Americans basic rights, Thurmond’s record stood for over six decades.
