It's construction, delivery, rhyme, assonance, consonance. It's setup and punchline and rhythm. Lehrer's like if a stand-up comic with the linguistic command of Shakespeare wrote musicals.

One thing I want to say about Tom Lehrer is that not only were his songs deeply, darkly funny, but they're also so linguistically and musically fine-tuned that they are *hard* to perform. I don't think anyone has ever even come close to performing them like he could.
