Although the debris path looks continuous, the topography certainly looks prime for an airborne section!

On 21 July 2025, an extremely large rock avalanche occurred in the mountains in Wanrong Township in Hualien County, Taiwan. Initial measurements suggest that this ran out for about 6 kilometres.

First cloud-free optical satellite imagery from @planet.com show the destruction of Dharali village in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, India. Unfortunately the source area in the mountains is still obscured by cloud and so the ultimate cause is still speculative. πŸ§ͺβš’οΈ

Alright lidar friends ( @opentopography.org @bmenounos.bsky.social @rockavalanches.bsky.social) how do you deal with overhanging cliffs when doing a DEM-of-Difference? In other words, I want to produce a viz of the changes but the changes occurred under a roof (we have good point coverage there)

Private Land Conservation Program This program provides funding to eligible organizations to promote the conservation of biodiversity on private lands.

This flew under the radar a little bit, but Alberta recently announced a new land conservation program. Sounds great right? The problem is that the funding is only available if organizations are based in Alberta and operate *exclusively* in Alberta.

Sign above the roadway that reads "Marda Loop"

My neighbourhood is getting a multi-year, multi-million dollar public facelift, including a new welcome sign. But holy hell this sign sucks. No panache. No indication of the historic nature of the area (was named for a streetcar loop ~120y ago). No design.

In other words, to take advantage of the funding, larger organizations like the Nature Conservancy of Canada or Ducks Unlimited would be ineligible. Read that again. In. Eligible.

New models improve predictions of snow, rock and ice avalanches A new 3D simulation tool developed by ETH and SLF researchers now allows for significantly more accurate predictions of complex alpine mass movements, supporting alpine risk management.

Very cool modelling work from the Chair of Alpine Mass Movements at ETH, and SLF predicting rock / ice avalanche travel paths. Read to the end for the video!
