unordered ordinal. Categorical data pose many challenges but they are as tractable with comparative methods as more well-behaved Gaussian models. The most important issues to keep in mind are: data availability (attempting to fit multinomial models with small datasets may lead to spurious results);

Our recent paper looks at location-scale interfaces in comparative data. But predicting variance in variance extends much further - if you still have not have a look here onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.... (another recent paper in @globalchangebio.bsky.social). We show how extending the idea

Figure 5. Time series showing cumulative number of cases averted at each time caused by the intervention calculated using our method (single-world) and a
standard method. Shaded regions denote 90% confidence intervals. Note that there is more variation in the middle of the epidemic, so it may seem as though the
number of cases averted is large during those times. (Online version in colour.)

Are we doing simulations wrong? This paper convinced me we are. doi.org/10.1098/rstb... Usually we run 2 sets of "worlds" w and w-out intervention. Gives large uncertainties that include negative (harm) effects of interventions that are actually always positive (beneficial)!

I’m sad to hear the news that the wonderful Jane Goodall is no longer in the world. Her work with chimpanzees at Gombe in Tanzania taught us to look at other apes - and ourselves - differently. I was privileged to meet her later in life and tell her what an inspiration she was to me.

The models are notably more complex but fittable with modern Bayesian GLMM routines. Think of them as looking at mean and scale (usually variance) evolution along the tree, here in an example of two concurrent Brownian Motion dynamics driving diversification of both variance and means.
