The image is of a comic.
Panel one depicts Santa Claus. He says, "Have you been naughty or nice?"
Panel two depicts a happy dog. He says, "I am ALWAYS a good boy."
Santa responds "Very nice!"
Panel three depicts Santa again. He says "...And you?"
Panel four depicts an orange cat climbing a Christmas tree, turning his head to look back at Santa.

its not going to give you a formula to meet the woman of your dreams or even much of a clue how to get out of bed in the morning, but it is what it is

something i learned reading an academic handbook on couples therapy is a theory that most couples don't ever really resolve core contentions, they have frozen conflicts they manage. i think this is the same with insecurities as well

Reform deputy leader dismisses claims of Farage’s past racism as new witnesses come forward Richard Tice says testimony by about two dozen people about party leader’s school days is β€˜made-up twaddle’

It's quite a weird experience to have political leaders and hundreds of their supporters deny what you know to be true. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

This is getting stupid now.

We're at the point where Labour acknowledge both the damage caused by Brexit AND that rejoining the Customs Union (more accurately, joining A Customs Union) would boost growth.

And yet they still reinforce their red lines.

Lots of people need a theory of politics beyond β€œrepublicans bad, and democrats are unequivocally good.” It would actually help the Democrats win more elections. Both parties have high agency in what brought us to this moment of fascism.

Whether or not racial bias is involved, I think it’s wrong for elected officials in power to redraw electoral maps for the purpose of subverting the will of their voters.

Rand Paul tells me that he wants the full video of the Venezuelan boat strike released.

β€œAnd I think if the public sees images of people clinging to boat debris and being blown up, I think that there is a chance that finally, the public will get interested enough in this to stop this.”

I intend to defend a very modest version of the propositional theory, and hence a very modest version of the truth theory of literary value. Furthermore, I am not going to defend either of these theories in any kind of thoroughness. I merely want to defend them against *one* possible objection. I have, in another place, already defended them against a different objection. My intention is to continue in this way, objection by objection, until both theories are secure. At my present rate, if my interest does not flag, I estimate the take will take one-hundred-and-fifty years.

I love this intro to a philosophy paper, though I can't actually remember which paper it's from.

I definitely do think that COVID's cultural changes were absolutely huge and, even though it is too early to really say this with confidence, feel like they could turn out to be pivotal in ways we shall rue.

the reason why those "the left made me do ___" things ring so hollow is that Trump has been, since 2015, the primary actor in US politics. everything, in some shape or form, has been a reaction to his assault on the sanctity of the US constitutional order

Why, it’s almost like nobody likes these people or ever wanted anything that they were selling, and the only reason they’re in these jobs at all is because they were crowbarred into them by Britain’s horrendous media outlets.

Publishing all the other boat murder videos but refusing to release the one of the two survivors being killed is an admission they know exactly how bad it looks. There's no other distinction to draw there, no reason to publish the others while withholding that one.

You’re absolutely right β€” you are Pagliacci. It would certainly be difficult for you to attend your own performance! I should not have given such paradoxical advice, and I apologize deeply for the error. There is no excuse for my failure.

Nevertheless, comedy is a powerful healing force. My recommendation is to seek out live entertainment. For example, great clown Pagliacci is in town tonight. Go and see him. That should pick you up. πŸ”— Sponsored Reply (Great Clown Productions, Ltd.)

Basically bit of both - the only elites who are able to retain their status as leadership cadre are those who become wingnuts.

Not too sure about this, tbh - plenty of true believers you can point to as antecedents, and the big funders are believers. Think the main thing is that this kind of right-wing subculture has become completely detached from society, for various reasons, and that becomes Bircherism, all the way down.

This, I think, is profound. And perhaps a general process in history that has happened before.

I think it generalises outside the US but Farage is an exception. Meloni also an exception too from what I can tell. But I think Wilders, Modi, various members of Poland's ruling party, fit the pattern.

I buy the Cabaret theory of modern politics: current right wing politics was, once upon a time, a thing elites sold to rubes while merely pretending to believe themselves while they pursued wealth, but now the True Believers are actually in charge and acting on sincerely believed insane nonsense.
