I used to teach. That is the natural state of humans before they start to actively learn.

Before that there were no credits. Companies would keep devs anomymous to prevent them from building up a portfolio and leaving. If you look for it there are indexes of easter egg credits in older games. Anyway I suspect there was some similar mechanism then too.
