Our democratic allies are immediately registering their intense disapproval of Trump's mistreatment of Zelensky in the Oval Office, and they are expressing that disapproval in ways that are unmistakable in their directness, will be viscerally felt, and are strategically important.

Classic Daily Mail disinformation

Pt 1: Non sequitur. DSTL studies Novichok so they must have poisoned the Skripals.

Pt2: wrong, there is plenty

Pt3: misleading.

Pt4: both wrong and misleading

Pt5 and table: wrong and/or misleading on all counts

Wow, big surprise. It turns out that getting sick more often does *not* make you stronger, but actually weakens you and makes you more prone to illness. The idea that 'kids just need to be exposed to bugs' needs to die. jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...

Top panels: graphs showing increases in spillover events, extinction rates, and temperature anomalies over the last few centuries. Bottom panel: a map of 10 pandemics since the year 1900. Four were linked to agriculture, two to wildlife use, and one to climate change.

🚨😷🧪 NEW: A growing body of evidence shows that pandemics, biodiversity loss, and climate change are part of a broader polycrisis - but there are no simple solutions. A sweeping overview of "Pathogens and planetary change" for the first issue of @natrevbiodiv.bsky.social, out now 🔓 rdcu.be/d6lHl

‘It’s not just alerts, it’s a state of mind’: How a wildfire monitoring app became essential in the US west Watch Duty – which began in California and has expanded across 14 states – alerted the public to more than 9,000 wildfires in 2024

The Guardian had a story on them published on Sunday Pretty prescient! They got started up here in Sonoma county covering just a few counties. Now it’s 22 states!

Scientists drill nearly 2 miles down to pull 1.2 million-year-old ice core from Antarctic Analysis of the ancient ice is expected to show how Earth’s atmosphere and climate have evolved.

This will get a bit lost in the shuffle of everything, but glaciologists in Antarctica have finally drilled a continuous ice core stretching past 1 million years. Congrats to the Beyond EPICA team! Can't wait to see the results.

We’ve been watching the Watch Duty team do absolutely *unbelievable* technical work all week (they’re members of our Fast Forward open source program), handling a surge of millions of people trying to see where the fires are in real time. There are still people who do such good on the internet.

How Worried Should We Be About the Latest Bird-Flu Mutation? A virologist explains that why this probably isn’t the big one — but that it’s a sign of bad things happening with the virus.

I had a nice, if foreboding, sense-of-impending doom-filled chat with Matt Stieb @nymag.com about my concerns with the current H5N1 situation.

Great catch by @susrust.bsky.social of an announcement by Marin County, CA of another #H5N1 #birdflu case in a child for whom the route of exposure isn't known.
Statement says nothing about how sick/not sick the child is.

Helen, is there concrete evidence re: would someone acquire #birdflu by touching a deceased animal or merely by being near an infected one?

this is a bar chart showing the states that have reported confirmed H5N1-infected herds: CA, 336; CO, 64; ID, 35; MI, 29; TX, 26; IA & UT, 13 each; MN & NM, 9 each; SD, 7; KS, 4; OK, 2; OH, NC & WY, 1 apiece.

#USDA confirms another dairy herd in California is infected with #H5N1 #birdflu. This brings the state's total to 336 infected herds, and the cumulative national total to 550 herds in 15 states. www.aphis.usda.gov/livestock-po...

Interesting factoid about California's #H5N1 #birdflu in cows problem: the CA Dept of Food and Agriculture says that to date 9 previously infected herds have cleared quarantine.
Only 9.
That means 327 dairy herds in the state remain in quarantine.
