Groups of foods categorized in four categories by how processed they are, starting with unprocessed or minimally processed foods like vegetables, milk, eggs and whole grains. Next category is processed culinary ingredients, like butter and oils. Third group is processed foods like canned fruit and vegetables, salted meats. Final category is ultra-processed foods, like potato chips, cereals and commercially produced bread.

Over half of the calories consumed by Americans come from ultra-processed foods. 😢
