Extreme weather is transforming the world’s rivers. We need new ways to protect them Rivers support billions of people but are among the least protected parts of nature. A major review shows what needs to be done as climate change accelerates.

When extreme events happen together or in sequence, their impacts can be catastrophic for people and river biodiversity. Whether that’s a flood following a drought, a drought and heatwave operating in unison, or a flood falling on saturated ground, the impacts of these compound events can multiply.

Nonlinear thinking in ecology and evolution: applying the threshold elemental ratio across levels of ecological organization - Oecologia Nonlinear dynamics govern ecological processes; thus, understanding thresholds is important for measuring and forecasting the effects of climate change and management of natural resources. However, id...

Do ecological thresholds driven by nutrient limitation transfer across biological levels of organization?

Our team explores how ecological stoichiometry can help tackle questions like this here!

The scientific publishing we used to know is broken in a way we will not be able to fix. It does not even deserve a fix. Let’s move on.

Thanks for the link, this is crazy and sad indeed! Will be used for future reference how things should not be handled. Also: the original article, open access, the reply to the discussion, open access, but the discussion? Restricted access.

100 years ago, research vessel #Meteor set sail to explore the Atlantic Ocean – one of the most important expeditions of the 20th century. To mark the anniversary, GEOMAR and DSM/Leibniz-Institut für Maritime Geschichte launched a storymap.

Ecological and evolutionary consequences of changing seasonality Climate change and other anthropogenic drivers alter seasonal regimes across freshwater, terrestrial, and marine biomes. Seasonal patterns affect ecological and evolutionary processes at different eco...

If you think the seasons are feeling… different, you may be right.
Our new review in Science (@science.org) shows that Earth’s changing rhythms could have major and underestimated consequences for life on Earth. 🌍🧵

These two award-winning scientists illustrate how messed up the system is in 🇩🇪 and 🇨🇭. One had a successful career but had to find a permanent position elsewhere. The other's contract will run out in 3 years. It also illustrates how it won't be easy to accommodate US scientists in these systems. 🌊

Images of calcium carbonate deposits as travertine, covering leaves, as microbialites, on a macroinvertebrate, as a whiting event in a lake, and as a benthic microbial mat.

My first post on bsky to announce my first solo author paper is out in @aslo.org L&O Letters. doi.org/10.1002/lol2...
Thanks to lots of amazing conversations with collaborators and a call out on that other social media to gather info on lakes, rivers, streams, wetlands, etc with calcium carbonate.

Dissolved carbon dioxide in the water reacts with these alkaline substances to form bicarbonate ions, a stable form of carbon that can trap the element for millennia, thereby reducing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere without acidifying the ocean. Then, to restore equilibrium, the ocean absorbs more carbon from the atmosphere. This chemical reaction makes the ocean the planet's largest carbon sink, a term referring to a natural or man-made reservoir that absorbs more carbon than it releases.

Even among marine biogeochemists, I would say there are only a handful worldwide that truly understand "alkalinity" (@agdco2.bsky.social is one and you should follow him), so it's always astounding to me that we're all now using the term casually like this. 🌊
