On 1 Dec 1941 the NZ Division ceased to participate in the battle for Libya as an organised force. Some elements of it would continue to fight, most notably 5 NZ Bde which fought on the Gazala line before being withdrawn. The remaining 3,500 men and 700 vehicles on Zaafran outside Tobruk withdrew.

While the division had been carved up, with 5 NZ bde overrun at Sidi Azeiz on 27 Nov, and 6 NZ Bde smashed outside Tobruk, it had nevertheless been the spearhead of the destruction of the Axis forces. Between its sacrifice and that of 5 S.A. Bde and 7 Spt Grp a week before, Axis forces were spent.
