empirically one can say that games with a focus on spacing and avoidance have fallen out of favor, and that all successful action games trend towards a timing focus, and thus new games should start with that style as a baseline to appeal to the current audience... and they wouldnt be wrong

This is the biggest issue the medium has to contend with. The designers are the taste-makers, they have trained the audience to like specific gameplay approaches, leading to a negative feedback loop where going outside the mold gets riskier with audiences more easily alienated by something new
