Ronnie Eldridge Politician, activist, mother, friend, and one of the great New Yorkers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. She is missed by many.

Ronnie Eldridge was a wonderful force of nature. A pioneer for women's rights & social justice, she led with wisdom, empathy, and tenacity.

I'm grateful for her leadership and honored she named @nyclu.org as a “favorite organization” for memorial donations. Ronnie was certainly a favorite of ours.

In other words: Even if Gov. Hochul’s bill passes, many New Yorkers will still have cause to worry and may avoid getting help in an emergency, taking their child to school, or even reporting a crime, for fear they could end up in ICE detention.

The only serious solution is the NY for All Act.

New York’s top judge calls sentencing practices ‘stupid,’ urges reform — Queens Daily Eagle New York’s top judge last week bashed the state’s sentencing laws, claiming “everything we are doing here is stupid,” while continuing his public plea for lawmakers to pass sentencing reforms.

Wisdom from NY’s top judge: sentences are too long and sentencing reform is long overdue

Anti-speech zones threaten New Yorkers’ First Amendment rights, invite biased policing, and are also unnecessary given existing laws that already protect people from harassment, violence, and intimidation at houses of worship, schools, and health clinics.

New York’s decades-old sanctuary laws have made the city safer, supported our economy, strengthened communities, and made it easier for people to access vital services.

We must continue to strengthen our city’s commitment to immigrant New Yorkers.

NYPD’s Tisch must heed Mamdani’s lead No post-election decision by Mayor Mamdani garnered more attention than keeping Jessica Tisch as police commissioner. She’s served with a level of honesty and professionalism her recent predecessor…

✍️@dlnyclu.bsky.social: Under Mayor Adams, the NYPD ramped up arrests for minor offenses, increased pedestrian and vehicle stops + searches, and police misconduct surged.

Mamdani’s election shows NYers are eager for a new approach. The mayor and commissioner should come together to deliver on it.

'Sooner rather than later:' Stewart-Cousins is ready to pass immigrant protections After expressing support for a prominent bill to expand sanctuary policies, state Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins seems to be putting weight behind her words

We agree, @leaderasc.bsky.social: the time to pass the New York for All Act is now.

As ICE continues to wreak havoc, our priority must be protecting New York's immigrant communities.

Trump and his minions are trying to demonize Renee Nicole Good and justify her murder, but we are not cowed.

We are not intimidated.

And we are not fooled.

Court ruling jeopardizes freedom for pro-Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil A federal appeals panel has reversed a lower court decision that released former Columbia University graduate student Mahmoud Khalil from an immigration jail, bringing the government one step closer t...

This decision is disappointing - but it does not go into immediate effect.

The Trump admin violated the Constitution by detaining Mahmoud thousands of miles from home and retaliating against him for his speech. We won't stop pursuing all legal options to ensure Mahmoud's rights are vindicated.

Universal childcare: great for kids ! And a huge step toward women’s equality. Necessary but not sufficient.
BUT… keep it away from the family regulation system

Shame on #FIFA. #WorldCup #Soccer is about sportmanship and building bridges.
Peace prize to bully-in-chief is a betrayal. I say #redcard Infantino.

“Some people say, ‘Why bother with the courts? It’s fixed,’ ” she said. “Well, every case is a life, or lives.”

The NYCLU is fighting Trump's overreach in the courts, in the legislature, and in the streets - and led by @dlnyclu.bsky.social, we're not slowing down.

The FBI spied on a Signal group chat of immigration activists, records reveal Exclusive: Agency accessed private conversations of New York ‘courtwatch’ group that was observing public hearings

BREAKING: The FBI infiltrated the private Signal chat of a volunteer group monitoring ICE activity at immigration courts.

Spying on New Yorkers for their constitutionally-protected activism is a dangerous return to the discredited—and often lawless—overreach tactics of the McCarthy & Hoover eras.

Jessica Tisch to Remain NYPD Police Commissioner Under Mamdani Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani announced Wednesday that he will appoint Jessica Tisch as his police commissioner, continuing her tenure that began under Mayor Eric Adams. They have differing views on some...

It's good that Commissioner Tisch is standing up to Trump by affirming that there is no basis to send the National Guard to NYC.

In the next mayoral admin, we hope the Commissioner places a renewed emphasis on officer accountability, eliminating racial disparities in enforcement - and much more.

Federal Agents at the Polls The freedom to vote is the very foundation of our democracy. Voting is how we secure our civil rights and liberties and help shape our country, state, and town. Every eligible citizen has the right to cast a ballot freely, fairly, and accessibly - without fear of deception or intimidation.

It’s a federal crime for anyone, including government officials, to intimidate or threaten someone in order to interfere with their right to vote.

Know your rights when you head to the polls.
