Ronnie Eldridge was a wonderful force of nature. A pioneer for women's rights & social justice, she led with wisdom, empathy, and tenacity.
I'm grateful for her leadership and honored she named @nyclu.org as a “favorite organization” for memorial donations. Ronnie was certainly a favorite of ours.
In other words: Even if Gov. Hochul’s bill passes, many New Yorkers will still have cause to worry and may avoid getting help in an emergency, taking their child to school, or even reporting a crime, for fear they could end up in ICE detention.
The only serious solution is the NY for All Act.

Anti-speech zones threaten New Yorkers’ First Amendment rights, invite biased policing, and are also unnecessary given existing laws that already protect people from harassment, violence, and intimidation at houses of worship, schools, and health clinics.
New York’s decades-old sanctuary laws have made the city safer, supported our economy, strengthened communities, and made it easier for people to access vital services.
We must continue to strengthen our city’s commitment to immigrant New Yorkers.

This decision is disappointing - but it does not go into immediate effect.
The Trump admin violated the Constitution by detaining Mahmoud thousands of miles from home and retaliating against him for his speech. We won't stop pursuing all legal options to ensure Mahmoud's rights are vindicated.
