How Ukraine Is Turning to Renewables to Keep Heat and Lights On Russia continues to bomb Ukraine’s fossil-fueled power plants, leaving much of the nation shivering during a brutal winter. But Ukraine’s new emphasis on developing decentralized power — from solar pa...

“Since the full-scale invasion, Ukraine has added over 3 GW of new renewable energy capacity.

Wind and solar arrays with independent transmission lines are scattered over the landscape, which makes them harder to hit and easier to repair”

On the right of the image is a sheer cliff face marked with vertical striations; talus lies at its base. The left of the image is in almost total darkness, and the background is deep space.

This is a cliff on comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko.

It's about 1 km tall.

If you jumped from the top, it would take you 47 minutes to reach the bottom, and you'd probably be OK.

Illustration from "Spécies général et iconographie des coquilles vivantes" depicting four views of sea shells labeled as "Cadran (Solarium)." The top shell is conical with textured, layered ridges and brown spots. Below it are two spiral shells with intricate patterns and segmented brown markings: one shows the top view, the other reveals the inner spiral. The bottom shell is also spiral with a smoother, lighter surface and scattered brown spots, exposing its inner whorls. The shells display detailed textures and natural coloration typical of 19th-century scientific illustrations.

A Roman mosaic depicting an owl with wide eyes, brown and red body, and blue feet, set against a cream-colored background with a black geometric border. The owl looks a bit deranged.

Just another Monday…

A Roman mosaic depicting a somewhat whimsical owl 🦉, found in Uzès, southern France, dating second half of the 1st century BC.

A young barmaid behind the bar at the famous French nightclub Folies-Bergère is staring forward in a bored, introspective way. Behind her is a mirror which reflects the lively scene. At the top left you see the green shoes of a trapeze artists. More importantly, at right you see the back of the barmaid, and see that she is face to a man who leans close and seems to be requesting something.

This is Manet's famous painting "A Bar at the Folies-Bergère":

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Bar_at_the_Folies-Berg%C3%A8re

The perspective looks all wrong. You're staring straight at this barmaid, but her reflection in the mirror is way off to right. Even worse, her reflection is facing a guy who doesn't appear in the main view!

But in 2000, a researcher showed this perspective is actually possible!

Winter may be over, but for Ukraine’s energy workers, the work never stops.

Roman never planned to live in #Kyiv. His life was in Mariupol. After surviving more than a month under russian occupation with no food, no water, and constant shelling, he evacuated his family.

The picture shows a needle made of bone, it resembles its modern descendants with an eye at one end and a tapered end.

Things used in everyday life are the real archaeological treasures!

This sewing needle was made from animal bone some 13,000 years ago.

Some designs simply don't need to be improved, because form and functions were perfectly matched from the start

A circular terracotta relief featuring a face with a wide grin and its tongue sticking out. The face is framed by wavy, snake-like hair.

A terracotta antefix with the head of Medusa, the snake-haired creature whose sight turns everyone to stone.
Medusa’s head was a popular motif and used to ward off any evil.
Antifixes were used to conceal the ends of the tiles that ran along the edge of roofs. Ca. 480 BC

An intricate octopus cut from a single piece of paper

Japanese artist Masayo Fukuda hand-cut this life-sized octopus from one sheet of paper. Known as Kirie in Japanese (translated as “cut picture”), the art form involves cutting intricate forms from a single sheet of white paper and then contrasting it against a black background to reveal the design.

Figure from Oktaviana and coworkers (2026) showing the oldest panel from Liang Metanduno. At left is a photo showing the locations of calcite sampling and associated U-series ages; at right is a hand-drawn rendering to illustrate the handprints. The bird figure and human figure were added to this panel long after the handprints.

It's striking to me that the earliest examples of rock art are hand stencils. Someone outline their fingers to announce: "I exist! I am here."

This one, from Sulawesi island in Indonesia, is ~68,000 years old, making it the oldest known cave art in the world. 🧪

'O’clock’ is a contraction of "of the clock."

‘Clock’ comes from the Medieval Latin ‘clocca,’ which meant “bell.”

Church towers would ring bells to mark the passing hours.

‘Cloak’ also comes from ‘clocca’ as the garment takes a bell-like shape around the body.
