I’m a state rep in WA and one of the prolific #waleg posters. In my state, I can only use my “official” account to write about things with a legislative nexus, so I have to keep a separate account to comment on broader stuff (wider politics, the war, etc). Would love an easier way to explain that

True, but the policy question before us isn't should there be AVs *or* human-driven cars. The question is whether we should allow AVs to operate in WA *alongside* human driven cars and what benefit there is to cities, workers, and the state. Cars are dangerous, I'm not sure AV cars are better (yet)

I do! I'm not a "hard no" on the AV question, but I have a lot of questions I want to have answered before we open up our roads to AV companies. Lots of conversations to be had.

That's the bell. The budget passes with a vote of 52-41 (meaning some Dems were a no). Now we're off to the Senate to see if we can reconcile our budget with theirs. But first, a thank you to our amazing budget staff 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 #waleg

And it's ok for the people to feel "the best we can" needs to be better -- in fact it's essential. Those are the voices that push us to be better, to maximize justice, health, safety, and education; to minimize ignorance, harm, and loss. Then we come back in 9 months and we do better #waleg

Here's a non-political point of view: This budget isn't the best, there are a lot of very hard tradeoffs we had to make because state budgets have to balance every year. Some of those things we may fix in conference, others we may not. This work is about serving the people the best we can #waleg

Honestly super disappointed in the rhetoric from the last Republican speaker who I think of as one of the more solid members of the legislature. Very harmful and just untrue words. #waleg

Republican speaker claiming they were absolutely not talking about the thing Republican speakers just said: they think transgender kids are inherently dangerous and insidious instead of just kids who are trying to live their lives with a level of bravery very few on this floor could show #waleg

"I don't think we should vote for an amendment that assumes that certain children are going to commit a crime because of who they are" says Rep Stonier. Republicans claim this isn't relevant to the amendment, but it's definitely relevant to the debate and what they've just said #waleg

"Our state has been playing chicken with the federal government" says next Republican speaker. That's one way of describing unapologetically standing up for the rights, safety, and well being of children in our state whatever their gender. #waleg

Republican speaker says the Brandi Kruse report is apparently now being investigated by the Pierce County Sheriff, the same one who came to #waleg this year and physically threatened the lives of legislators. Is it too late to talk about law enforcement conduct standards tonight? #waleg

Republican speaker is now citing a report from Brandi Kruse about a wrestling match. I repeat again -- transgender kids are not evil assaulters, they're kids who want to be left alone to play sports in peace. #waleg

"I don't think that boys belong in girls locker rooms" -- great news, transgender girls are girls so we're all good there, thanks. #waleg

Rep Stonier noting that we don't pay for things in the budget *before* initiatives are adopted by the voters. We'll fund any initiative passed by the people when it comes -- IF it comes. The last few Heywood initiatives were strongly rejected by voters. #waleg

Hypothesis: What might not make girls feel safe or comfortable is having to have a pelvic exam in order to play rec league soccer because a small group of folks find the existence of transgender kids to be terrifying. #waleg

Republican speaker claims many girls in his district are quitting sports because they "don't feel safe" or "don't feel comfortable" -- just to note there are about 10 trans athletes in the entire state and they're just kids who also want to play sports, not hulking evil super soldiers #waleg

Next amendment provides $2 million to implement the OTHER Heywood initiative - the one that requires girls to have their genitals checked if they want to play sports. Prepare yourself for some good old fashioned Republican gender panic! #waleg

"They cannot withhold essential information about children from those children's guardians" says Rep Walsh. Yes, that is what the law says right now. Rep Santos just read it to us all. #waleg

Also Republicans are now just being honest that this is about the Brian Heywood funded initiative and not really about parental rights (which are already codified in law). And also about how much they hate OSPI #waleg

After being just, completely schooled by Rep Santos, Republicans are pivoting fast in why this amendment is needed. It's going to add to the RCWs, even if it's adding the same language, and that's gotta be good right? #waleg
