Acute suffering (e.g. anxiety or depression) is regularly a functional reaction to events - poverty, injustice, abuse, trauma, overwork etc. DSM II recognised this. DSM-III abolished it, implying such suffering points to an internal disorder to medically managed. Discipline can also regress.
