I, too, hope we can talk IRL sometime. 💛 Perhaps one day we might even collaborate (e.g., on another piece about Tom). I've followed you on IG too.
ever initiating conversations about Tom's problematic legacy. This makes articles like yours all the more important. Tom's work is surprisingly under-critiqued, I feel.
use of Nazi-inspired insignia at the Foundation and within gay men's leather culture at large. I spent so much of my time at the house grappling with my ambivalence around Tom's work and its contemporary relevance (I also consider myself a Tom of Finland fanboy, BTW). I can't see the Foundation...
the Foundation as "careless gatekeepers of a problematic archive." Rather, your piece (rightly) positions the Foundation as overly careful gatekeepers of a problematic archive. "Overly careful" because the Foundation is so reluctant to have conversations about Tom's mixed legacy and the ongoing...
Thanks so much for writing this piece, which a friend just recommended to me. I was an AIR at the Foundation in 2016. I agree with much of what you've said (and I, too, fell in love with the house and think the Foundation's mission continues to be important). I don't think your piece positions...

As the Trump administration continues to relentlessly expand its anti-trans agenda, we must be relentless in supporting the resistance projects that trans people are leading. tiny.cc/transfund
When I think about all the excellent trans commentators who could have been engaged to write a more trans-centred piece for The Nation about this escalating transphobic moral panic, it saddens and frustrates me. Cis writers and editors have roles to play in addressing this.
In short, trans people are present in your piece only insofar as we are objects of transphobic violence.
Perhaps your piece will do some good among the particular cis readership it is written for, but the phrase "nothing about us without us" comes to mind.
For example, trans folks have also been pointing out for some time that the NYT's coverage of trans issues has been used to justify anti-trans policies. You don't mention this, or the resistive work that trans people have been leading, or how to support this vital work.
This is a well-intentioned piece, but I have concerns. You say that there is little reflection "about how we got to such a terrifying place." There have been many reflections from trans commentators, but you don't mention or quote a single trans person.

Politicians like Danielle Smith are quick to invoke notions of freedom and government overreach when it suits their needs. Meanwhile, they're happy to ram through restrictions on youth accessing gender-affirming care. This conservative libertarianism is so selective. bccla.org/2025/09/tell...
Thanks for the detail!
I spoke on a panel last week. In my remarks, I noted that the arts are not inherently a force for good. Right now, the prime example of this is the widespread institutional failure in the arts sector as it relates to the genocide in Gaza. Bravo to these protesters. Encore!
Just a ghoulish, evil attempt to deny Breonna Taylor justice and give a greenlight to future impunity for white supremacist violence.
More novel research: Currently reading the intro of Gemma Lucy Gibson's PhD dissertation "Body Positive Babes: An Exploration of the Contemporary Body Positivity Movement and the Acceptable Fat Woman’s Body." Been a while since I've read fat studies scholarship, and it's great to return to it.
I'm loving the book I'm currently reading. "Caring to Know: Comparative Care Ethics, Feminist Epistemology, and the Mahābhārata" by Vrinda Dalmiya. 🤯😍 I'm hoping this book will inform the ending of my novel.

I definitely see some parallels with the Oz election. But I’m glad for Australia that Dutton and the Libs lost so badly (including Dutton’s own seat!).
Well, the Canadian result wasn’t entirely good. The ruling govt is centre right and the new PM is signalling the same line of inaction on Palestine. Support for minor parties collapsed, including progressive minor parties, which saw gains for the Conservatives too.
Good luck. 🤞 Canada just had a federal election and although the result was mixed, I was so relieved the Conservatives lost.
Tomorrow, a certain online mega-retailer launches a book sale, just days before Indie Bookstore Day on 4/26. This is no coincidence; Bookstore Day is one of the largest revenue drivers for indies.
Indies need our support to thrive & build community spaces for all...mega-retailers do not.
"It's worrying that a leader of a political party in Canada would try to dictate how research funds will be granted," said David Robinson, CAUT's executive director. "This kind of American-style culture war has no place in Canada." #cdnpoli www.cbc.ca/news/politic...
Wild. Right after Cory Booker went viral for speaking on the "wretched truth about America," he just voted to keep arming a government that just officially achieved The Deadliest Conflict Ever for Journalists & executed and buried 15 paramedics and their emergency vehicles

Yes, she probably performed best in the English debate.
I still hated how she positioned herself as the progressive candidate by saying that Liberals shouldn’t be Conservative-lite … when she is Conservative-lite on Palestine.
