Action is the antidote to despair. We are scientists and science-oriented people who do climate activism in NYC.
Please someone do a story interviewing the influencers who said โthey are the sameโ last fall.
08.08.2025 19:02 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I'm increasingly convinced that the entity pulling the strings behind the Trump admin is just a sentient lump of coal.
05.08.2025 16:56 โ ๐ 14 ๐ 5 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 1This would appear to be an incentive for normal people to continue their work to bring g down Tesla.
05.08.2025 11:25 โ ๐ 5 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0They know climate change is real. They know what causes it.
Destroying our ability to mitigate and minimize climate disaster is an intentional choice.
This administration is filled with climate criminals.

In case you're wondering what's up with the intense downpours we now get, it's climate change.

NYC: August 2nd, weโre taking to the streets across the city.
Because itโs time to build community resistanceโand that starts with you, in your neighborhood, on your block.

Building renewable is incredibly important. Writing an email is incredibly easy.
Seriously, the effort:reward ratio is ridiculous. Just do it.
We called for NYPA to #BuildPublicRenewables. Today they officially doubled their buildout plan. ๐ช๐๏ธโก๏ธ
Now we need them to double it again. Help make it happen: bit.ly/nypa15now
That AI will do something great does not make it likely. Nor does it give people doing terrible things to promote AI a get out of jail free card.
Right now? AI does not appear to be on track to solve climate change.
Mostly, people seem to want to use it to make slop.
It reminds me of when adults say things like, "Children are our future! Who knows who will grow up to do great things and solve [problem of the moment]."
Yes, sure, kids grow up and sometimes do great things. But that doesn't let current adults off the hook.
The theoretical possibility...
And it's presumably even more true for AI, which is expensive and seems to work well only when it's big.
That's not to say AI won't do anything to solve the big problems of our day. No one can see the future!
But there's no reason I'm aware of to expect this...
tech companies are highly incentivised to do whatever they can to get products to be used A LOT.
Selective, targeted use is a recipe for economic failure (from their perspective). This is true for any commercial software-ish product I can think of...
most AI consumption is going towards things that aren't very useful.
One of the main ways tech companies make money is through 'consumption'.
In this context, consumption is use of whatever product or cloud service they sell.
As a result...
Good question. In my opinion (not official opinion of Scientist Rebellion) AI *could* be a tool that is used to help solve real problems, such as climate change. HOWEVER, in practice, that is not how it is being used today. And the incentives are such that... 1/x

Super action yesterday at Wells Fargo HQ, SF.
#stopbillionaires, #stopbillionairessummer #oilandgasaction
There was a lot of โyouโre doomedโ talk when the real estate lobby sued to overturn local law 97 & the gas lobby sued over the city & state bans on gas in new buildings. Headlines + stories implying theyโd win. But these were bs cases without legal merit.
Now, weโve won all 3 cases.๐
It's great how we can't organize a substantive answer to this, and no one talks about it -- a lesson from Covid, I guess.
Here's what's coming east, 48 hours out. Also a heat wave.
There is no excuse for financially enabling new fossil fuel infrastructure or extraction. Companies that do so must, and will, be targeted with disruption.
