What is actually happening when a state racially profiles someone for the way they use language (e.g. saying salaam alaykum)? 🤔

To find out, Claudia and I spoke to linguist @kamrank.bsky.social for this new episode of Radio ReOrient from @reorient.bsky.social and @newbooksnetwork.bsky.social 🎙️🌙

Citizenship by Choice, Not Necessity: Political and Emotional Drivers of Naturalisation Intentions Among Migrants From High Income Countries In the growing body of research on immigrant naturalisation, migrants from high income countries have received scant attention in their own right because of their relatively low baseline citizenship ....

Are you from a high income country? Do you live abroad? Ever thought about taking up a new citizenship?

Then, check out my new paper with Floris Peters (Utrecht)

I wrote about my own complicated, expensive immigration visa application for Vox in 2019, and I still hear from people about how it is one of the very few in-depth articles about the immigration process not written by a law firm: www.vox.com/the-goods/20...

The War on Terror, esp under Bush & Obama, was an effort at creating ungoverned spaces where killing specific kinds of proposed subhumans (eg Arabs) didn’t trigger rule of law or human rights concerns. MAGA is simply expanding these spaces stateside to a new proposed subhuman: “the brown immigrant”

it's been years upon years of labored "campus culture" op-eds from salaried writers hectoring students about free speech, and now the state is kidnapping students for their speech in broad daylight

Consider this. 6 people in plainclothes approach you, and begin to cover their faces. At least one appears armed. As they grab your phone and backpack, they do not prove who they are. They say they're going to take you, but they're not saying why.

What would you call that?

Top university loses court battle to stop Israel-Palestine protests on campus The order was ‘urgently’ needed ahead of a Saturday graduation ceremony, lawyers said

Grateful to Cambridge University for putting together such an abysmal legal case full of so many omissions that the Judge quite properly and firmly dismissed their application for a long term injunction on Israel-Palestine protests www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home...

One of the biggest achievements of the attack on “wokeness” (a piece of purely far-right framing) was that it made a lot of people have contempt for the demographics who were giving the earliest warnings of what Musk was up to. It’s hard to listen to those who you don’t consider to be fully human.

The weaponisation of free speech by reactionaries has been incredibly successful and core to the mainstreaming of their ideas

It's shocking so many fell for the idea that power doesn't matter when it comes to it

It should be obvious that free speech without equal access to it is undemocratic

You Blamed DEI for Hurting Your Career. Now What? For people who pin their failures on diversity, corporate America’s DEI retreat removes a barrier—or maybe an excuse.

this confirms something i have long suspected, which is that certain people are told that their professional and academic failures are because of “affirmative action” or “DEI” as a way to avoid difficult conversations about their mediocrity www.wsj.com/lifestyle/ca...
